What a fabulous little car! Stylish too, it's big where it counts most, and dead economical to run. I'm talking about 75 m.p.g if you tootle along at about 60 m.p.h. on A roads.
That's better than any other car I know of - even with current makes/models. SEAT must have been mad to cease production. It's got a straightforward VW Direct Injection diesel engine, but will eat up the motorway miles in sedate fashion at speeds well in excess of 70. The most quiet, comfortable speed is about 80 m.p.h (4000 r.p.m.) in 5th gear. At this speed you'd return about 60m.p.g. These sort of speeds find the engine just purring along (and it's capable of a LOT more!).
Even in the very worst driving conditions (short distance, cold winter when the engine never warms up) I still get 50 m.p.g. minimum.
I make a point of using Mobil1 engine oil. It's more costly than other oils but it lasts longer, is much better and I swear it gives more m.p.g and power.
I've had mine 5+ years now and I've no desire or intention to change it. My only grouse is that it was registered in Jan 2001-two months before they changed the road tax to one based on emissions. I'm taxed on engine size. Were it registered after March I would only be paying £35! Oh, and mine doesn't have aircon, a sunroof nor electric windows. Ah well...never mind.
