This is the 3rd Smart I've had, all from new, Brilliant little cars, may be little in size but big in lots of other ways, seating yes only has two seats, many of us never use the rear seat in our cars, anyway, unless you have children, then you would be looking for a family type car. I've found that its generally just a dumping ground for rubbish, coats etc. My 6'3" tall husband with a stocky build is happy to sit/drive my car, in fact he says that other drivers on the road, seems to get a little perturbed when he over takes in my car, as its quite nippy i've got the 84 bhp which is brill, no hesitation in take off at roundabouts/ slip road in this one. I,m a health care community worker, so mpg are an important consideration for me, with the rise in fuel prices, and i get at least 50 mpg which good. 35 pound car tax A YEAR. plenty of space for the shopping as well.
Great fun car, with the top down is just cool to cruise, parking easy.
I will say that I've been driving these cars for 10 years, reliability excellent, home and abroad. funky colours, and no I'm not a teenager, a mature lady, not a has been either. But I would also say that a lot of older people have seen the light with this car, as its seats are high and enables you to get in/out with ease, also wide doors.
Some time ago I tested this car and I had the occasion to make some experiences. I took my opinion about a lot of things of this car. At the beginning I want to speak about the space. It is very very small but it is used with rationality and each thing is in the right place. A big handicap is that this car can carry only 2 people, but if you are single and you drive in crowded zones, this is the best car you can find. The design is the most original I've ever seen, but I notice that a lot of people likes it. The luggage van, of course, is very small. The air conditionated works well, I think because of the small space. For the safety there are airbags, ABS like others car...but the roadholding power is not the best, specially if you are on a wet street. The instrumentation is very essential, I remember also a small display with the corrent gear. Yes the gear.It is the worst thing on this car because is very slow (manual or speed-gear) like the previous version. But the engine is very good!It takes a very few of fuel but the fuel-tank is too small (only 22 litres). Performances are on average, the acceleration is quite normal but the real good point is the speed (136km/h is a quite high for a 599cm3 !). Finally the price: about my opinion is quite expensive for this tipe of car. I recommend you this car only if you a sportive driver and specially if you don't have children!
It was love at first sight - when I first saw the Smart I had to have one. I know there are many people who share my view, and plenty of others who don't. That's one of the things I love about my car.... It produces such strong reactions. It's more than just a good looking car - the tiny 3 cylinder 600cc engine has more go in it than you would think. The nippy little car can reach speeds of 84 mph - fast enough for me - and is equally at home on motorways, in towns and in the country. The choice between the clutchless manual and fully automatic options means that you can choose how to drive. For control when you need it, the manual option is great. Alternatively in heavy traffic or on long drives, sit back and let the automatic option do all the work. There are people (usually ones who have never had the pleasure of a drive in a Smart) who think that your comfort must be compromised by the size of the car. Far from it - there is more leg room than many family saloons, and the Smart comes with many added extras as standard. Every Smart comes with driver and passenger air bags, ABS and traction control for your safety. Other options include air conditioning, side airbags, heated seats and CD multi-changer. It also comes in a range of wacky, and also more sensible, colours. All this in a small car? It also comes with one free bonus which you don't get in many cars under £10000 - FUN!! The Smart can make you smile like nothing else I know. You might think I'm overlooking all the bad points. Have I ever had any problems? It has never broken down and I have never had to use my can of emergency tire weld (the Smart has no spare). I know people who have, but then nothing's perfect is it? I, on the other hand, have done over 17000 miles in my Smart, without a hitch, and wouldn't give it up for anything. Ok, so it might be wierd looking, and it might only have 2 seats. But I'm
happy. Love it or hate it, you can't help but notice the eye catching Smart.
Bear in mind the following if you are thinking of getting a smart car; Smart cars do not come with spare tyres so if you need a wheel change you will need to get your car recovered to your nearest smart centre. At the moment there are only 4 smart service centres in the country (this number is due to increase this year). This means if something goes wrong with your car you may need to get it recovered hundreds of miles (depending where you live). They are not the most secure vehicle. The exterior panels lift off and it is possible to open the doors without too much difficulty. The boot can also be opened form the outside with no difficulty. Smart vehicles can immobilise themselves if they are exposed to certain radio waves (like those used by emergency vehicles, in otherwords your car could immobilise itself if an ambulance goes past!) The cars do come with 1 years breakdown cover, which hopefully you wouldn't have to use and also have a warranty. Their website is quite good so definately worth checking if you are thinking of getting one. Apart from all that they are neat little cars. You won't be able to out much in them but if you just want to tottle about in one then it could be the car for you. There are much cheaper if you buy them from Europe and also come with much better benefits so shop around!
