Advantages: It goes forward, It goes backwards
Disadvantages: It only just goes forward and backwards, Tin car, Low power
Where do I begin.... If you don't already know, the Subaru Justy isn't really a Subaru. You can tell just by looking at it, and even more so when you drive it. The Justy is really a rebadged Suzuki with 4-wheel drive added. And this is the problem. Take a underpowered car, add 4 wheel drive, don't touch the engine, and what are you left with...an even more underpowered car. Positive things I found with the Justy, well really its getting out of it and back into my Subaru, and really that?s about it. Even the salesmen tell the truth about the Justy, my local dealer has only ever sold 3-4 Justy's and that was to themselves for courtesy cars. Problems with the Justy, instead of saying everything, which is unhelpful, I will name a few, Build quality, when driving this thing, you feel stuck in a tin can, anything and everything that touches the car will make an impact, whether to the car or driver. Cornering is impossible at any speed other than stopped (well not quite, but just to give you an idea). A small car, small engine, but drinks loads for what you get. Now the most embarrassing thing about this car is pulling onto your own driveway and seeing everyone?s face. You can only smile and make a joke out of yourself somehow. Picture it, go on, previously you have been driving a state of the art piece of machinery that everyone thinks is great, and then you turn up in a tin can. Now I don't want to make a biased review here in case someone is really reading this to consider a Justy. Hopefully if you had even thought about it and taken a test drive then it would have put you off. So the Justy, its a car, well sort of, it gets you from A to B, well sort of, so whats wrong with it. Well ofcourse this is my opinion, and the opinion of the saleman from my local Subaru dealer, and anyone else I have spoken to, but to see for yourself, go test drive it.

- 18/12/03 I'm onto my third Justy but then again, I spend a lot of time driving quickly on snow and ice in Norway with studded tyres fitted to it. I wouldn't go for the MK.lll Suzuki Swift based model depicted here but my MK.l (E reg) was a belter. Only 1100cc but well built. The next was a MK.ll 1.2 auto. Avoid these though I did well with mine. The gearboxes last about 15,000 miles and no-one want to fix them. Get a good nick MK.ll manual 1.2s and you'll have something that can take around all year like a fiesta front wheel drive but can slip into 4x4 mode when needed. If you find one with good bodywork, spend a bit of time and money injecting Waxoyl into the sills and spraying the other rust prone points and it'll give you great motoring for years and even in the UK, when the roads are "greasy" in the winter, put it into 4x4 and it'll be sure more sure footed than anything else you're likely to drive and in severe weather, as long as the road gritters and snow ploughs have done their work, it'll go through anything. Much more nimble than most "big" 4x4 cars like Land Rovers, Shoguns etc.. If I found a clean MK.ll manual Justy today, I'd get it. Mine have had a hard life in Norway and half a winter in a 2 wheel drive Astra was a fiasco in comparison. |
