I have owned this car for only 6 months now but it has proved to be an excellent buy. Used prices are low, I paid £1500 for a 1998 model with 89 thousand miles on the clock and full service history, tax and MOT etc..... The engine is very rev happy and delivers smooth acceleration and the V6 sounds nice too! There isn't really any flat spots however the engine is not very powerful for a 2.5 V6 delivering just 142 BHP so it is certainly not a quick car but then with a 4x4 performance is not what you are looking for anyway.
Sadly the car is poorly equiped, yes it has central locking, electric windows, electric mirrors and air con but it doesn't have a clock or trip computer. The interior is typical Suzuki, cheap plastics all around however it is put together well with no rattles.
Off road the car is very capable and it is nice to be able to choose 2WD or 4WD. The low ratio box is excellent and this car has been able to go places that my friends Land Rover Discovery couldn't.
In terms of practicality, fuel economy is what you wouold expect from a car and engine of this size.... pretty poor, boot space is poor as is rear leg room. Not the vehicle of choice if you need to get adults in the back but no problem for small children.
The car has not let me down yet even after some pretty heavy off roading. Overall I would recommend this car if you are looking for something comfortable on the road and capable off road.
I decided to buy a four wheel drive vehicle because I was fed up of losing large amounts of money on cars that depreciate at the speed of light. The screen price of second hand Suzuki's told me that they held their value well and the trade in offer together with the standard Suzuki three year warranty sealed the deal. I took delivery of my ex demonstrator Grand Vitara, the 2500cc V6 / 24 valve job more than two years ago,and although its no rocket, it picks up really nicely, this engine variant is excellent smooth with power and refinement, it likes a drink but its not as bad as you may think, I get over 30 to the gallon (without the A/C on)..and so far,it has been the best car I have owned. The standard equipment is impressive, front and rear electric windows, e/mirrors, sunroof, mine has a great quality Sony stereo with cd player I also had the option pack fitted which includes air conditioning and abs braking ..well worth the extra £1500 but I also couldn't resist the tow pack and bull bar . It has now done more than twenty four thousand absolutley reliable miles and it continues to impress me every time I drive it. The cost of servicing has been excellent with a twelve thousand mile service costing under £100 from my main dealer, the service interval is tiresome however with just a 6000 mile interval. Small enough to get under height barriers but large enough to carry all you need, on long journeys the seats fold to make a bed and there are so many little storage compartments and holders it's a delight. The driving position is really nice with a good view of the road and with bags of feel being transfered through the steering wheel, but be careful, in 2 wheel drive the power is transferred to the rear wheels and in wet conditions on islands heavy use of the throttle results in the rear quickly losing its grip and breaking away, its not a problem if your expecting it !! It is bui
lt on a ladder chasis which is traditional for off roaders it makes it very strong and stable a nice touch is that whenever you feel you need it you can simply switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive whilst on the move and without any manual adjustment. It does go off road just as well as it does the motorway, the first time was truly amazing with the car never missing a beat but with both me and my family nearly having a coronary at the type of obsticles that we were able to gracefuly sail up and down. I have just altered the price of the vehicle, you can now buy one of these cars brand new from the dealer for £14500 plus the cost of the option pack this is more than £3000 off the price that I paid a year ago..I shall definatley be buying another, maybe the disel vesion with an automatic gearbox Stop press....06/08/00 I Just booked the 18000 service, cost...£75 a bargain I think, on the down side I have noticed a part of the drivers backrest that shows signs of wear...I hope they replace it under the three year warranty..check back on the 23rd to find out... No problem all covered by the warranty new seat on order free of charge viva suzuki !! April 2001 ;The twenty four thousand service is a much pricier affair than before it was two hundred pounds and some change but it did involve a lot of work so I still think it was reasonable.....overall I still love this car December 2001 ;now 36000 on the clock and still going as well as ever, I think the last service was about £150 but can't be certain. I have fitted four new tyres this month at a cost of £350. I thought about changing the car early next year but I can't see any reason to do it because I would only buy another one of these so I'm keeping it ...it will be the first car I have had to MOT in twenty years !! my chrismas pressie was some flashy side steps and a matching rear wheel cover, It must be love.
