Suzuki Jimny 1.3 Soft Top
Advantages: Looks good, 4x4, reliable
Disadvantages: Poor acceleration, poor fuel economoy
I currently own this car, it is a great runaround and if you can get one I would recommend it. I own a W reg vehicle.
Of course as will all cars, there are good and bad points, I will first start with the good.
Despite being a 4x4 jeep the car is small, can fit into the same spaces most smaller cars can but with the wonderful advantage of being higher up. I love the height of it, compared to a Fiesta etc where you feel like you are sitting directly on the road this car elevates you somewhat. The view from the large wind mirrors is excellent and although the back of the soft top seems a little difficult to see out of you soon get more than used to it.
I also find it quite reliable in comparison to other runarounds, in the 6 years I have had it funnily enough the same two issues have happened twice but little else has gone wrong. The heater matrix is costly and has broken twice, the second time the part was at least under warranty with the dealer garage, the second issue was the exhaust back box, twice in four years it needed replacing. I'm not sure if these are common problems with Jimny's, I expect it was just bad luck and the original heater matrix I had fitted having a fault. But other than that, the car has been good to me, failed to start only once due to the battery dieing.
The 4x4 aspect has come in handy during the last couple of years when it has snowed. It looks lovely and is fairly comfortable overall, under the bonnet there is plenty of room to work and nothing is crammed in.
So the bad points, well firstly it would have to be fuel consumption, for a 1.3 it certainly loves to eat those pounds. I can only assume the weight of the car is a big part of the problem. This leads onto speed/acceleration, a 1.3 engine in a heavy shell is never going to have decent acceleration, the car will do 70 but will feel like you are on the tarmac at Heathrow.
It is a little noisy, especially when on a motorway, the soft top of course isn't ever going to keep things too quiet.
The UK insurance and road tax isn't so bad, the tax being only a slight increase on the likes of a fiesta of the same age.
Overall I have enjoyed using the car, it's reliable and gets me from a to b locally with little fuss, I would recommend it for those looking for a runaround.
Summary: A good runaround car, reliable and looks good
