Advantages: Reliable, cheap to run
Disadvantages: Handling, poor equipment
This is one of them cars that is a real " hand me down" and yes, sure enough it was handed down to me a short while after I started driving. The reason why I have mentioned this car is because, put quite simply it did everything I ever needed it to do. It was reliable without any of the mod cons of some of the cars today (no electric windows, mirrors, power steering). It had a very basic (1.0 liter, 3 cylinder) engine, which was easily and cheaply repaired, due to the lack of electrical components. Due to the small 3 cylinder engine, it was quite a harsh ride, but still managed a top speed of around 85mph, which was more than adequate on the motorway. T
The ride quality was not exactly brilliant, every bump on the road was felt reverberating through my being. The acceleration wasn't anything to write home about either (0-60mph in 12 seconds). In terms of handing, it was pretty shoddy to say the least.
All in all, it would not seem like a great buy. However, in terms of finances, it was very cheap and economic to run (around 40mpg) - insurance (fully comprehensive £230), servicing (£65) petrol and spares/repairs (one again another great engine from Suzuki, which was more than likely taken from another detuned motorbike engine)
In terms of day to day life and transporting good, it had decent sized boot space. For seating purposes, 4 people could be seated more than adequately.
Lookswise, although it wasn't considered to be a good looking car, the newer shapes looked markedly better with body kits and alloy wheels on as standard. It's a rounded, almost egg shaped car, similar to an old Metro.
Although these cars were very prone to rust (particularly around the arches and tail gate), the newer versions do not suffer from this problem. At the time they came in a range of funky colours, mine was metallic green, which made it stand out on the road.
Another factor, making this a worthwhile investment, it was capable of swallowing 150000 miles without breaking a sweat. All in all, if you're looking for a cheap car (£1000 would get you a 2001/2 reg) just to get from A-B, I would definitely recommend this. There are 3 door and 5 door models available, with different sized engines, ranging from 1 litre to 1.3. There are also the hot GTI models.
This particular model would be ideal for someone who's just passed their test and wants a run around. For those of you who are serious motorists, this is not the car for you.
Summary: Great for a first car, but if you can, go for the GTI.
