I have recently given up my company Toyota Avensis 2.0 GLS at 90,000 on the clock, over 30,000 of which were driven by me. I was not able to choose the car that I drove, so hopefully my view will be an objective one. Equipment / comfort ------------------------ The car is well-equipped, with a great Sony CD/radio/minidisc/cassette player, sunroof, air conditioning, airbags, rear wiper, electric windows, fog lights etc. Having driven other cars of a similar size over long distances (eg Peugeot 406, Ford Mondeo) the Avensis is by far the most comfortable - no niggling aches for either me or the passengers. Having traded in my Nissan Primera 2.0 for a Toyota Avensis 2.0 GLS 2001 model a few months ago I'm happy to report that I made a wise choice. I've driven Mondeo's, Scenic Megane's and even the new shape Vectra amongst others but the Avensis is definitely my favourite by far. First things first, be sure you know which Avensis you are buying. The latest model is a horrible boxy looking thing, take a look at a Toyota main dealer website and you will see what I mean. When travelling to the UK, I usually hire Hertz cars through British Airways. Last month I was lucky enough to get a 6-month-old Toyota Avensis 1.8 hatchback for 3 weeks, and I was SERIOUSLY impressed! The 5-speed gearbox is very flexible (I managed over 110 mph on a suitably deserted stretch of motorway early one morning, and I could overtake slow stuff at 80mph in third without even breathing hard), and the engine responds instantly to the accelerator, which I really appreciate as a retired Police driver.
