Advantages: Quality and reliability
Disadvantages: Firm ride, poor rear headroom
My Father has had his Toyota Camry for the past 4 years and readily admits it is the best car he has ever had. It is an estate version in metallic burgandy, and it's the 1989 2.0i, GLi Executive auto model. It cost my Father £3000 back in 1996, and it had 160,000 miles on the clock, but with full service history, this wasn't a problem. The quality of the engine build and performance is second to none. The mileage on the car now is near 200,000 and it is as quiet as ever. Dad has it serviced regularly, and the Camry hasn't failed an MOT yet. It sails through every time. Parts can be expensive, but because Toyotas are generally exremely reliable, this isn't something to lose sleep over. The ride is a little on the firm side, as with many older Japanese cars, and the rear seats don't have too much headroom. The boot space is slightly limited in that the rear wheel arches intrude into the luggage space, but the Camry can be forgiven for this as it more than makes up for it in other departments. The power steering is a dream, and the air conditioning a life saver in hot weather. The acceleration is adequate, by no means G-force, but the Camry comes into it's own on the motorway. It is very quiet and will overtake gracefully at 70mph. My Dad and I have never hammered the car down the motorway, but it would glide effortlessly to the more anti-social speeds of 90 and 100 mph. Everything on the car, from the door clunk as it shuts, to the smoothest of auto gear changes, tells you that the Camry is on the whole, a quality car that is solidly built and as reliable as old boots. Pick a nice one and I don't think you can go far wrong.
