TOYOTA CARINA II Estate (Toyota Carina)
Member Name: lizziefreeman
Advantages: Thoroughly cheap, reliable, with simple mechanics and electrics Disadvantages: None I agree that the Toyota Carina II is a superb car. I acquired mine 4 years ago for £300; a 1989 Carina II 1600 GL estate with 152,000 miles on the clock. I have since driven it in and around London, up to the North of England, all around the South-East pushing the mileage up to 234,000 with the original, unreconditioned 4AF engine. During that time I have spent £2,695 on general repairs / parts replacement which I consider entirely reasonable for this age of car and the mileage I have undertaken. I calculate that the costs equate to just 3p per mile, plus of course fuel. But that surely is economy, with no depreciation to worry about! (My previous 3 ltr high performance (150 mph) car, a Vauxhall Omega Elite devalued by £9000 over a similar time frame, cost thousands in expensive insurance, petrol, repairs - air conditioning £1,000 alone!). It may not have the luxurious comfort and prestige of my previous car, but it has NEVER let me down (starts always FIRST time!) and the cockpit is furnished with all I need for a good liesurely drive; I have taken it on a number of occasions to a speed of 120mph! It does not have a 'Cat' either which is a tremendous bonus, and most jobs on this car can be undertaken by a proficient DIY person, unlike the Omega that required a electrical / computer boffin! Summary: Overall a classically great car produced by now the World's leading car manufacturer.
