Though fairly conventional in layout and even power output, Echo's powertrain also deserves praise for its smarts. The 1.5-litre engine, endowed with variable valve timing, is far more flexible and responsive than its 108-horsepower rating would suggest; around town and on the highway, Echo responds instantly and alertly to every prod of the gas pedal, zipping away from stoplights and around slower-moving cars.
