The column gears are a godsend when we are fully loaded,because the carpets rest on the dashboard,and therefore you cant even see the floor,never mind find a floor mounted gear stick ! We also find that carrying such a weight makes the steering quite heavy,it would have been a good idea for the Hiace to have been designed with Power Steering. We presently run 2 Toyota Hiace Long Wheel Base vans. The oldest of which is a 1989 petrol model...it has now done 154.000 miles,and it been a brilliant workhorse...Our business is Carpet Fitting,so we need the LWB versions to carry 4 metre lengths of carpet. I have to admit that we have not been very good at getting either of the vans serviced on a regular basis...there are over 150000 miles on the clock of the Petrol one,but they have never let us down...which is more than we deserve !
