Advantages: Spacious luxury cabin, handling, mechanical perfection

Disadvantages: thirsty, high ins group

I never saw myself driving a large tank- like 4x4. However the imminent arival of our 4th child necessitated a reevaluation of this class of car. The landcruiser was up against Mitsubishi Shogun / Mercedes estates / Volvo estate.

Having test driven them all the big Landcruiser came out on top by a mile. The car has immense presence and overwhelms Range Rovers physically. The driving position is commanding but at the same time giving you a sense of its size. It's an easy car to drive and park in town. My wife was very concerned about handling it - now she won't let me near the car.

The engine is endlessly powerful and full of torque yet at the same time quiet and restrained. There is no turbo lag or drivetrain shunt. The leather interior adds quality and every electric gadget is included as standard. The plastic work inside could be a bit more subtle - I'm used to this having had 3 Jap cars. My first car was an MX5 - beautiful balance and controllable handling. This will sound bizarre, but the Toyota, for a car of its weight, handles equally as well. There is fully independet suspension at each corner which is perfectly sprung and damped. The car goes round corners like its on rails , with no body roll or kickback, the steering is precise yet light.

Mechanically invincible - I bought second hand a year ago with 114,000 miles on the clock. it simply does not go wrong. A small oil leak was due to a broken O ring on the filter housing - pennies to replace, worth doing prophylactically at major service

Having had my arm twisted into buying one, it's turned into one of the best cars I've ever owned.
