I have owned this car, s reg 1998, from new and it has been an absolute delight. I was however a little shocked at first when it arrived with an enormous rear wing. A couple of days later you forget the appendage and get to grips with the car beneath it. Toyotas baby sportscar is an excellent drive. The 2 ltr engine gives nearly 170 hp but most of that power is high in the rev range. You have to be prepared to throw the gears around a little if you want some serious forward motion. 0-60 times always seem a bit irrelevant when you actually drive a car. It is safe to say that it has enough acceleration to dispatch most run of the mill cars.

The handling of the MR2 is the tricky bit. The rear is very glued down under most road conditions. The tyres are very wide and lets not forget that the engine sits right on top of it. However, in the wet if you push it by accelerating out of a bend too early it can change ends quickly.

The best roads to drive it on are winding country ones where you can point and squirt it. Have no fear though of a long motorway journey. It is quiet enough to talk normally at highish speeds.

All up it is a great car to live with. The boot is surprisingly deep ,but buy squashy bags suitcases are a no no, and the seats comfortable. The driving position is purposeful and you definitely feel like you are in something quite sporty. Vision through 360 degrees is also excellent.

MR2's switching ends is not true if you have good tyres on all four corners. This was a rumor started by the motoring press when the car was first released, and has sadly stuck with it.
