Advantages: Great car
Disadvantages: Can be costly in area's
I brought a toyota supra Na just over a month ago now and I have to say it is fantastic. The car itself can be picked up for a reasonable amount sometimes even a bargain can be found but due to still finding a good car with low miles, good bodywork can be a process that may require a fair bit of travelling to get what you want.
The car is a low slung sports car with four seats although you will be hard pressed to fit three people in comfortably as the driver and passenger seats are more comfy further back impeding passengers in the back but cars like this are not really meant to be practical day to day cars for people wanting to carry a car full.
The boot if you can call it that is more of a small shelf with a which acts as the spare wheel cover that comes with a decent variety of tools jack, spanners and various maintenance items that fit tidily out of sight.
The performance of the car is good considering the car weighs nearly one and a half tons and comes with a variety of bhp and either left hand drive or right. The performance depends on the type you buy as there are various models of the Na such as a sz and the sportier SZR models facelift aerotop (convertible) or the twin turbo models that are the RZ (jap spec 280bhp) and the gz aerotop (jap twin turbo convertible) or the highest spec model which is the UKspec twin turbo that has 326bhp and are extremely rare seeing as only 600 are around.
The price difference between the na and tt models can be thousands depending on age condition and mileage but £5500 plus is a typical amount for a decent car.
The car I brought was a mkiv 1994 Na manual 5speed although toyota do one of the best automatic gearboxes you will ever find and the engine which is a 2jzge (2jzgte for the turbos) are regarded as being near on bulletproof as long as basic maintenance such as oil levels checked and services being kept up to date there is no reason why you cannot keep the engine going until the end of time.
The car can deliver 0-60 in about seven seconds although the car really starts to stretch it's legs at over 100mph where a top speed of between 150-160mph can be obtained in stock form. Fuel consumption can be hefty depending on how heavy your right foot is and with today's fuel prices in the UK the the 70 litre tank is not always your friend as in Japan they have higher octane fuel around and over 100ron and the Uk's highest octane fuel is tesco's momentum which is £1.41 a litre is my choice as running on a lower octane can cause the engines to not run as smooth as they should.
The car gives a smooth delivery of power to the rear wheel and can catch the inexperienced out on a wet day easily if not paying attention if driving at speed.
The car is comfy even on long journeys and although it can drink the fuel a long steady motorway drive can be no more expensive than other car's with smaller engines.
The handling feels good in the dry due to the low road position and wide tyres it will keep you planted with good information coming through the steering wheel.
The car is a great car for those that like to modify their cars as there is the option of turbo kit's for the Na to converting it to a twin turbo if you please along with a whole host of aftermarket styling options for inside and out of the car to turn it into even more of a head turner than it is standard.. Parts for the Na can be expensive but someone who is resourceful and uses places internet sites like mkiv supra club can obtain quality parts from other enthusiasts for a reasonable price and a whole host of knowledge to help you along the way.
This car is a great way to drive around in a car you typically do not see often enough in my view.
Summary: Well worth the cost in my eyes
