If you're in the market for a classic sports car you should consider a Triumph TR.

The performance is strong, (Autocar quoted 8.2 0-60mph when it was new, which for the period is quite quick) and the engine (straight 6 2.5 litre lucas fuel injection or carbs) lends itself well to tuning.

A well setup TR6 will give good torque throughout the rev range meaning it's easy and relaxing to drive (except for heavy steering when parking).

It should be cheap to insure, being classic, and many examples will be road tax exempt (pre 1973).

The exhaust can be exchanged to give a anything from a gentle burble to a terrifying bellow, depending on your preferance.

The interior is basic, but functional. A TR6 isn't the sort of car you want to spend a lot of time in with the hood up... what's the point? With the hood up it's still windy (and a little damp it's raining). If you plan to drive this car everyday in Britain, I think you'll have to be pretty determined.

Luggage space is OK, but not huge. I take mine to the Le Mans 24 hour most years and I can fit campong gear and two weekend bags...
...and two people!

For the money, I think the competion is lacking... an MGB (maybe a touch cheaper, but only a touch) is less powerful, less noisy, although maybe easier to maintain. A big Healey - too expensive, and a bit olde worlde. A Sunbeam - unpowered in Alpine form, rarer and more expesive Tiger is probably an option, but there's probably less support for these as they're rarer.
Other TRs are also in the running - the 5 pretty but rare and expensive, shares the same mechanicals as the 6. The 4 (and 250 - US version) look similar to the 5, but have less power from their 4 cylinder engines).

Want a British classic sports car? Buy a TR6!

Agree with Angus.

I bought a new TR6 in August 1972. Took 5 months to arrive and cost me £1520 cash. Damson red with black interior. Ran it for 3 years before selling and buying a new Alfa Romeo Spyder. Only problems were a noisey fuel pump ("they are like That sir !"), and a sticking overdrive switch in 36,000 miles. Bought a second hand hard top after the hood had been slashed twice. It was a pig to handle but I did not lose much money on resale.

Not the brightest kid on the block, IMHO. The Alfa spyder of the same period is far superior and as easy to get parts for. I still have the Alfa, and should get it back on the road this summer.
