I owned this car for 6 months during 2007/08. It was a 2001 Y reg. The interior of the car was comfortable, spacious in the front but a bit crampt in the back. Boot space was great. It was a smooth ride with good power. Shortly after purchase I had major problems with the engine. The engine would stall if I went at speeds of around 60 - 70 and then took my foot off the accelerator to slow down. This happened to me on the motorway which posed a very dangerous situation. After a trip to the garage all seemed ok put down to an electrical problem. After about a couple of months the same thing happened again. The garage was unable to identify the problem. I found ... I took delivery of a T reg in March 99 and lived with it for two and half years totally 70,000 miles. I left the car with mixed feeling towards it. The overall build quaily of the car was generally good, the interior stood up well to hard use showing little signs of wear and tear after a good clean with all switches and trim remaining functional and in place. The bodywork also stood up well to the mileage. My praise is not so high for the 1.6i 8v engine. This engine in my opinion was underpowered for the car and if you were looking to keep your insurance rating down the 1.4i 16v is a better bet. The car ran with no problems whatsoever for 40,000, ... I bought one of these Astras in September 1999. When I took delivery of it, it was just under 1 year old. From day one it has been in and out of the garage, problems with the central locking, the boot locked and I couldn't get into it - which, considering the spare wheel is in the boot, was not very handy ! But probably the fault which has manged to annoy me the most to date is the electric windows which appear to have a mind of your own !!
