Advantages: Solid Driving Experience

Disadvantages: Looks better in 3-door

A purposeful stylish look augmented by great looking alloy wheels give an immediate appeal to this Astra SXi; looks even better in the 3-door version. Interior looks sporty too with the alloy dash trim and gear lever knob the disadvantage being the metal knob is freezing on sub-zero mornings, feels like your hand is going to stick to it! Front seats, shaped for comfort and support, add to the pleasing cabin.
The 1.8 petrol engine performs competently without ever really being exciting but, with all that, it is a good solid performer. I like the cruise control for motorway driving and the flexible engine with its good response at low speed, pickup being generally brisk giving a relaxed drive. Boy racers among you will probably find engine response on the slow side but shifting down the box soon wakens the Astra into more rapid progression.
Economy, again not top of the league, but in my experience I am getting low to mid forties miles per gallon (just under 16 Km per litre for the Europhiles among you). This can easily be dragged down alarmingly if you are a bit heavy with the right foot.
If you are a reasonably competent diyer, most running maintenance can be carried out without too much difficulty. Things that I have done myself include replacing brake pads and discs, new front hub assembly, rear suspension springs and, the most ambitious task, timing belt complete with new tensioners and water pump. I've saved a fortune on maintenance and servicing costs.
Best thing about this car becomes evident when driving. It feels so solid and predictable to drive; it's hard to explain but it feels like a much bigger car. If you've ever cruised along in a large luxury model, it has that feel without the having the sheer size surrounding you. Feels dependable and responsive to its controls and the overall impression is of an all round pleasing drive.

My parents actually just sold this car, it was reliable for a little while then decided to pack up with coil packs going every 6 months, we were warned they were slightly unreliable after a certain age mind you.. xx
