Vauxhall Cavalier review
Mk 1 1975 to 1981
Mk 2 1981 to 1988
Mk 2 1988 to 1995
I owned the Mark Three versions, I had one CD Hatchback, this had the two Litre engine, which was the same engine as I had in my Sri.
These cars were available in saloon, hatch, or in the case of the Mark one, even a coupe. There was 118 convertibles made, called the Centaur, and I have seen a few of these still on the road. The Mark twos could also be found in estate form.
Basically the Cavalier was aimed at reps, and they caught on well. The car replaced the ageing Victor, and in due time was itself replaced by the Vectra.
The Mark three was by far the best model, it had more spec than you could ask for, and the Calibra was a coupe based on this model, the interior was identical. Many versions of the Cavalier Mark three had leather seats, electric everything, and there was even a four wheel drive version. They were available in many sizes of petrol and also Diesel, with manual and automatic gearboxes. They had models designed as hearses, ambulances, and even armoured limousines!
There are still so many of these on the road, they cant have been a bad car, spares are very cheap, and available, scrapyards have plenty of the cars in, ad they are probably the last cars which are easy to work on. So many cars nowadays require a technician rather than a mechanic. The modern way to diagnose a problem, is to plug in a computer, but the old Cavaliers had no need for special electronics.
The Cavalier was a sad loss to fleet customers, and private motorists alike, they were a very good bargain as a used car. The Police had hundreds of them. I think they were a brilliant car.
When Vauxhall introduced the Vectra, the od Cavalier had been winning the British Touring Car Championship, for several years. The slightly embarassing thing is though, these new Vectras which were now being raced as a showpiece by the Vauxhall drivers, were consistantly being beaten by privateers, driving OLD CAVALIERS! - Progress!
Summary: A large comfy economic load lugger, with lots of spec. Cheap too.
