Advantages: Reliability, cheap to run, comfort and decent performance from the 2.0i

Disadvantages: Everyone will mistake you for a minicab if you drive around London late at night, zero image, bit dowdy to look at

I'm sad to say that I've just sold my beloved Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0GLi and part exchanged it for a newer model. This is the longest though I've ever kept hold of a car, and I know it's not the most exciting, nor the fastest, nor the most luxurious, but do you know it never once let me down.

Cavaliers seem to go on and on and on forever, mine came to me with just 24,000 miles on the clock and in a little over 5 years I wound this up to 145,000. It resolutely refused to breakdown, apart from a clutch cable snapping about a year ago.

So I'd urge anyone looking for a cheap (the absolute best Cavaliers are now going for around 3 grand) and reliable car which can eat motorways for breakfast yet still behave around town. The rule is though avoid the 1.6 or 1.8 and go for 2.0,2.5 or the hugely underrated 1.7TD (avoid the 1.7 non turbo diesel, it's a sloth!). The 2.5 V6 is maximum bang for your buck as it's a creamy smooth tourer of a motor with top levels of luxury (and 0-60 in under 8 seconds!)
