The Vauxhall Corsa (2011 SXI model) is a fantastic little car. Im not Jeremy Clarkson so i can't really talk about the rpm, bhp and torque etc. But as a young driver I can talk about practicality.
I bought my car as nearly new, It had 7000 miles on the clock, so it was basically new. Instantly it was a hit with me. I had a Fiat Punto beforehand, and it wasn't until i had this car i realised how quiet and reliable the corsa is.
The engine runs really smoothly and quietly with no juddering etc. The car is just generally quiet. It turns really smoothly and responsively, no stickiness to the steering wheel etc.
I have a 1.4 petrol engine and it's relatively cheap to run... half a tank of petrol costs £30 and it usually does me 400-500 miles before needing to be fuelled again. I was lucky enough to have the VXR pack on the car too which makes the corsa look smart and sporty, without looking like a boy racer.
Inside features a jack for MP3 connectivity, which I'm finding useful for my iPod.
The dashboard features a computer which features a mile clock, stopwatch, Miles left in the tank clock, current mpg monitor and total mpg monitor. Im finding the current mpg monitor useful for saving fuel, with a live showing of how much fuel I'm using it's helping me get the most out of my tank. The car comes with cruise control. It also features a CD player and electronic windows. There are options for in built sat nav, winter accessories (heated seats etc.) This all depends on the model of corsa chosen.
The boot is fairly spacious, it the option to expand it. My model did not come with a spare tyre as it has a built in air compressor and tyre repair kit to aid you getting home/to a garage, so i can expand the boot to the floor.
As a car for a young or single person i would recommend it to anyone as it is reliable, modern, stylish and simple at the same time. And like i say if buying brand new there is scope to customise it and make it totally state of the art! It is also cheap to insure for young drivers, it is completely affordable.
However i wouldn't recommend a family buying this car, there is not alot of space for a family of 4 people as it isn't vary spacious in the back seats.
But for me it is a perfect car!
I bought this car about a year a go and have had nothing but praise since the very first day i drove it. let me start with the interior - its the kind of interior that should be on a lot more expensive car. The dashboard is made from like a carbon effect plastic - really nice. seats are comfortable and even the finer details are really nice. steering wheel/gear knob. The drive is aso reasonably ok. wouldnt say it was really smooth but certainly is an enjoyable drive and has enough bite in the cceleration when you need it. the build of the car is great. Solid materials , good strong sound when you close the door which rings out robust the car is (if you get me) - only downfall is the rather large front columns which can get in your way at times but certinly not something that should deter you from buying this little gem.
This review relates to a black Vauxhall Corsa SXi, 57 reg, of which I have owned for nearly 3 years now. I find this car has proved to be a great first car for myself, as it proves a good drive, looking nice without been too flash.
Firstly, how the car looks on the outside. The shape of the car is wonderful in my opinion; well engineered, and the car looks very smooth and well put together. However, because of the extreme curvy nature of the exterior, and bumps you may have will be hard and expensive to cover up (as I well found out!) The car looks very nice in the metallic black colour I picked, but be warned, scratches do show up easily and it is a nightmare to keep clean! The alloys look very tidy on the car aswell, again, very good looking, without looking too flash.
For a car of its size, I feel the boot space is very good. With two sepearte compartments, which can be made into one bigger one, there is enough space for the weekly shopping or a pushchair. Trying to force two such items in together could prove problamatic though!
The interior of the car is also quite impressive. The dashboard and the radio look to be well designed, and, although made out of platic, are quite sturdy and go together well with the car. The car come with an AM/FM radiowith which up to 9 different stations can be on each frequency. It has a single CD player along with the radio, so you can listen to your favourite CDs whilst on the road. However, because it is only a single CD player, it is very difficult and probably stupid to change a CD whilst driving. To make up for this this, tthe car does have an AUX cable, very useful for people who like to listen to their MP3 players. Simply, buy an AUX cable suitable for your MP3 player, and plug it into your MP3 and the AUX plug, find the AUX option on the system, and there you go, listen to your favourite tunes on the road. Very useful feature. Also useful is the buttons on the steering wheel which enable you to control the radio and volume without having to take your eyes off the road.
The only bad word I have to say about the interior is the pillars at the side of the window. They can sometimes obstrcut your view, particularly at sharp corners, but this such problem has not been such a huge problem for myself. Also, as a small lad, I find it hard to see the front of the bonnet, making parking sometimes difficult, and it doesn't make a difference with how high I put my seat. Everyone else who has driven the car have also commented on this! Fortunately, this has not caused any accidents as of yet.
The car is very comforatble to drive in. More spacious than I imagined, and the seats are particularly comfortable. With the tyres pumped up to optimum pressure, I hardly ever feel the bumps in the road. The car also has many airbags along with the necessary seat belts, making it that little bit safer for any unfortuante crashes that may occur.
The performance of the car surprised me. As I got the car on 5 year finance, I decied to go for a 1.4, and I find the car to be fairly nippy, alot quicker than I anticipated! The petrol consumption is moderate at best. With careful economic driving, I am sure petrol would last a little longer, but I consider myself the average driver, and I would expect a car of it's size to consume less petrol than it does. The tank cost around £55 to fill, but with fluctuating petrol costs, it is difficult to say!
I would recommend this car to most drivers, as long as it was at the right price.
For this review, I am referring to the new shape Corsa. For my first car I have to say, I do like it, but if I were to buy another, it would have to be brand new.
Lets start with the styling. When the Corsa was first released, it was quite a small car, and now it so much bigger; I was so shocked when sitting in for the first time how much room there is in the front. I'm 6ft 3 and I don't even have to have the seat right back. From the outside, the Sxi has more detail than the other models like the breeze or club which is good as it is the more expensive model. I like the door handles being the same colour as the car, and not black plastic which the lower models have which makes it look a lot cheaper. From the front, the car has really nice lines, and I like the spot lights underneath for a sportier look. The sides of the car have the extra coloured plastic which other models don't have, which again adds to the detail and sporty look. From the back, I like the chunky lights which add to the shape of the car. The boots is also good not having to up the key to open it.
The inside of the car feels a lot more upmarket in comparison to the older Corsa. There is a texture to the dash board which makes it less obvious it is plastic. The air vents have more detail and the numbers for the radio stations are easily accessible and can easily have the station changed.
From the drivers seat, I do find that the pillars block a lot of view with the extra window in the side in front of the mirrors. This can be awkward when turning corners but it's not really anything important. The steering weal is leather which I was shocked about. I like how the radio station and the volume of the radio can be change without taking yours hands off the wheel. This is something you find in more up market cars.
The petrol consumption is up to 50mpg for extra urban. However I have only managed to get 40 mpg but this will vary with driving style and speed. The fuel tank has a 45 litre capacity and costs around £50 to full up depending on petrol price.
Overall I do like the car, and I would buy another, even if it is seen as a common boy racer car, but there's nothing wrong with having a little car that is surprisingly quick. They are also not too bad at holding their value if your looking to change your car regularly.
May 2009 was a sad month for me. I had to pay my final respects to an old and dear friend. We had been together for nearly six years. We had been through good times and bad, mostly good, and had learned to live together at ease with each other's foibles.
Admittedly our relationship didn't get off to a good start: she let me down badly in France and we ended up returning home separately. I might have called it a day there and then and, true, we did undergo an enforced trial separation but, after a few months I realised I really couldn't do without her. We got back together again and she promised not to let me down ever again.
Not that the relationship hasn't been without cost: she fully deserved the title, High Maintenance. But, for the benefit of looking good in her company and enjoying the buzz she gave me whenever we were together, the cost was worth it. Besides, what else is money for, especially when you can afford it?
But, after six years she was starting to look and act her age. Also, my personal financial circumstances meant that I needed to look after my wallet with a bit more care. I started hankering after something younger, prettier, less addicted to bling; something that would look after me in my old age and not go off in a huff when my eye wandered.
Yes, I know what your going to say: how very shallow of me; how typical of the male of the species; clearly suffering the male menopause; mid-life (I should be so lucky!) crisis. But, I had made up my mind: she had to go. The problem was, how to break it to her gently. In the end there was no alternative: I sat down with her and told her that it was best for both of us. Oh, there were tears, mostly mine, and not a few moments of soul-searching and doubt, but we both knew it was for the best.
So, finally, after nearly six, mostly very happy years, I said goodbye to my flame-red MG ZT 1.8 Turbo.
I confess I had already been playing around and one particular little honey had caught my eye. She was exactly what I needed: relatively cheap to own; exceptionally good looking; comfortable in her company; and not too small.
She was a one-year old, silver, three door hatchback that the then owner said he would let me have at a very reasonable price. She is a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 SXi and I think we are going to be very happy together for many years.
The Corsa looks rather like a slightly smaller version of the Vauxhall Astra Coupe. The family resemblance is quite remarkable and it isn't until you see them side-by-side that it is clear which is which. On the financial front, the attraction of the Corsa is that the Road Tax is just £125 (at the time of writing) whereas the MG was £225.
Clearly the 1.4l non-turbo engine is never going to be anywhere near as powerful as the MG's 1.8 Turbo but then, by the same token, it doesn't drink anywhere near as much fuel either, a very attractive feature in these days of once again rising petrol prices. So far my journeys have been all local and, even with all of the stop/start driving I'm getting around 35mpg whereas the MG would struggle to get any higher than 27mpg.
The performance, though, is more than adequate. True, you have to use the higher revs on the Corsa and, once the engine is up over 4,000rpm, the performance could be happily described as lively and revving freely right up to the limiter at 6,500.
The SXi model is the sportier version. It comes with attractive alloy wheels, shod with 195x55 R16 tyres. There is a spare tyre, fortunately: the MG only had an instant pump-up repair canister. The spare is only one of the emergency types though, so speed must be kept down when in use.
Only the front brakes are disk: the rear are drum brakes. However, braking is good and predictable, even when stopping more urgently than normal. Handling in general is good with precise steering, even when cornering under speed. The suspension is firmer than average but very much on a par with my MG, so I have got used to a ride comfort that others, used to softer suspension, might consider somewhat jarring. The advantage is that there is very little body roll on cornering.
There are two pairs of main lights for dipped and for main-beam, which results in good visibility at night. They are standard halogens as opposed to the zenon dipped beams that I had on the MG. The wing mirror on the driver's side is a bit disappointing: the outer edge is designed to give a wider view than the rest of the surface but in practice there is little improvement in visibility. I have added Paddy Hopkirk stick-on blind spot mirrors, which give a far better view.
The sports designation is also apparent in the front seats. These are typical of the supporting designs that include side wings and raised side edges on the seat area, that inhibit sideways body movement in corners. The seat is adjustable for tilt and height as well as seat back rake. The backwards/forwards movement is perfectly adequate even for my long legs and there is even just about enough leg room behind the driver's seat when it is adjusted to my perfect driving position. The only feature that is missing is an adjustable lumbar support but so far that hasn't posed a problem. The steering wheel is, as usual, adjustable for reach and height.
The boot is inevitably small but the parcel tray can be removed and the rear seats folded down. When this is done then there is more than enough space to fit in everything I want to take to the tip (my usual journey these days). For anything larger I will have to invest in a set of roof rails; the ones I already have will not fit, being designed for a 4 door saloon.
In the cabin the storage story is somewhat disappointing. The so called glove compartment is a joke: a pair of gloves is literally just about all you would get in it. The doors panels have trays in which a map book, so long as it is small, might fit. There is a small recess below the console where a few coins could be kept for parking meters, and a cup recess behind the handbrake for the rear seat passengers. Other than that, that's about it!
The SXi model has air-conditioning and the controls for this are at the bottom of the console. The air-conditioning is pretty efficient and, even in the recent heat-wave I've had no problems keeping cool.
Above this are the controls for the entertainment system. The radio enables up to 9 station pre-selects to be programmed in. The CD player also supports MP3 disks so you can carry quite a collection of music with you. There is also a mini-jack for attaching an iPod or other MP3 player. There are also controls for the music system on the steering wheel.
The main dials behind the steering wheel are quite limited. In keeping with it's sporty nature, there is a speedometer with a digital mileometer, and a rev counter. Other than these though, there is only a fuel gauge. There is no coolant temperature gauge so it would seem that Vauxhall are confident that there will be no problems there, unlike with the MG!
All round visibility is quite good: there are no obvious blind spots caused by badly situated body panels. A novel feature is the small window panel set into the door ahead of the mirrors. As usual reversing is hard to judge but I have had a reversing warning system retro-fitted and this works well. I don't anticipate reversing into anyone or anything now (don't ask!).
The MG was by far and away the best car I have ever driven. It was almost though not quite perfect. The Corsa has a lot to live up to and, of course, it will take some time to adjust to a car that is so different. Initial opinion of the Corsa is that, whilst far from perfect, it will suit me just fine, at least for the foreseeable future, for the sort of use to which I put it. It will be interesting to see how it handles long journeys but then I don't have any of those planned right now. If there is something to report in this area then I will return and update the review.
