Advantages: nippy, good fuel economy
Disadvantages: comfort, brakes, room, engines, outside noise.
I have in the past owned a B plate nova 1.2. When i first got it i liked it but the longer i had it, the more i hated it. Where shall i start, how about the brakes, i have heard countless amounts of people saying that nova brakes could be better, well i think that is an understatement. I found that round about a town the brakes were ok, but on any major roads you had to be very careful, it seemed to have no stopping power whatsoever. Keep this car in a town before someone gets killed. What about the seats, were they deseigned to brake your back or was that just how they turned out. You can never get comfortable in one. The engine always seemed to have something wrong with it, whether it was an oil leek or just not starting, it was guaranteed to happen. To give it a good side the engines were quite quick and the grip was not too bad, but out of the bad points i found there seemed to be a lot more than the good ones. I suppose the SR's and the GSI's were good cars but anything else isn't worth the hassle. I have been told that even though most novas's do have a lot of problems, if something does go wrong they are cheap to fix. Also, the newer models of the nova are supposed to be a lot better, they are good cars for the junior driver and people who have just passed their tests, but if you dont want to spend money on your first car and dont want to get your hands dirty then dont buy a nova. I have been informed that the brakes can all be replaced with better ones for as little as £120, which isn't bad.

- 24/03/01 Sorry to learn of your problems. The later ones are better, but the main advantages of Novas is that when they do go wrong they are cheap to fix and the parts are easy to get.
If you never want to 'get your hands dirty' then they are not for you, but neither is any older car.
Brakes ? The 'sliders' on the callipers are often the problem. Best to replace the servo/callipers/discs with up-rated items. Cost ? £120 in total for my son, doing the work himself. That has to be some sort of bargain. |

- 23/03/01 I have to admit, I've had a fair amount of problems with my Nova so far... |
