Advantages: A brilliant buy.
Disadvantages: Heavy car.
A very good buy, chosen as Best Second Hand Car one year, and Best Fleet Car another, this says a lot, it means the Reps loved them. They churn up millions of Motorway miles with ease, and rarely let you down. Our Police forces loved them, and the German Plod thought they were everlasting, choosing to keep them as "Autobahn Chasers" until they had clocked up some 300,000!!! And that is Miles, not Klonkymeters!
The first UK version of the Omega was launched in 1993, on the first of April actually, but nobody looked a fool because they caught on a treat. The second generation, called the facelift version, was launched in 1999. This facelifted model had a few more clever ideas fitted, plus more spec.
As a guide to what you should pay, we will take as an example a 2000 model on a V plate, we will assume it has average miles. If you bought from an independent dealer (Too old for Vauxhall main agents to sell) you should pay around a Grand. If buying privately, expect to pay fifty quid or so less, if in good condition, if in poor condition, this is worth a mere £630. Very little money for a car that cost £23,050 new.
These cars depreciate like mad for the first couple of years, so someone else has lost all the money for you. They are a very good bargain. The spares situation is good, with everything in plentiful supply, at cheap prices too, plus there are quite a few in the scrapyards. I will give you some examples of what I have paid over the years:-
Genuine Vauxhall oil filter - £1, Pattern parts wishbones - £24 each, Scrapyard front wing in perfect condition - £5. I also bought a nearly new steering wheel from the same scrappy for a tenner, and that was including the Airbag. So these care are very cheap to run.
The list of spec is impressive too:-
CD Autochanger
Six speakers
4 Airbags
electric windows all round
electric heated seats
Climate control with aircon
Sunroof (Early models only)
Cruise control
Leather adjustable steering wheel
Colour coded bumpers, side strips, and mirrors
Boot release on dash, and on key
Xenon headlights
Computer display, this shows instant and average MPG, trip, stopwatch, Date, Time, Radio station CD or cassette mode, Outside Temp, Average speed, Pretty much everything you could wish for.
The car drives as well as any BMW I have ever driven, the power steering is good, the lock excellent, comfort is fantastic, suspension is improved from the pre facelift models. Vision is very good apart from the windscreen pillars which seem very thick, but you soon get used to them. There is a feel of real quality about these cars, I have heard many times that these cars are as good as the German marques. These Omegas are made in Russelsheim in Germany.
These cars are a delight to drive, easy to work on, cheap to maintain, so I am having trouble picking fault, I am on my third Omega now, so they must be good to stop me moaning.
Summary: More toys than a toy shop.
