VR6 for the win! (VW Golf Mk III (1992-98))
Member Name: robvr6
Advantages: Reliability, comfort, motorway power Disadvantages: getting on a bit, a lot have been thrashed i own a 95 vr6 mk3, and absoloutely love it, it has given me no end of grief over the last 4 years, but i can honestly say that if they were still making this model i would buy it again new right now. they can be a little front heavy, but this is balanced by the fact that it produces a great amount of torque. once slightly lowered it will also handle much much better. im not exactly a boy racer but i do partake in a little subtle modification, such as lowering, and so on. for those people that love the modding scene, there are few cars out there with as much following as the golf, and some of the shows through the summer are great, just avoid the sea front cruises etc as they can be full of late teens and idiots that just want to go fast and infuriate. parts for the mk 3 can be a bit steep, but using someone like gsf will knock the costs down considerably, the engines on the vr6 are bulletproof as long as you maintain the timing chains and tensioners. if you are thinking of getting one, look for a clean late 95> model as these were chipped key fob models, with vw immobiliser built in. also go for the highline spec with climate control, then get it charged... its all about the vr6 sound Summary: great cars if looked after
