Advantages: quite fast, reasonably practical, well screwed together

Disadvantages: not as reliable as thought to be

i am the ownwer of a 2 and a half year old mark 3 volkswagen golf gti which i have owned from new , and at the time of writing this text has just done 37000 miles.i have only used the car for normal use and do not consider that i have used it over and above what could be described as that. like many people who buy volkswagens i bought it because i thought it would be more reliable than average because of the image that volkswagen like to purvey. this particular car however has not proven to be so. since i have had it i have had to replace the starter motor after about 32000 miles because a fault in he ignition system caused it to lock into the engine and consequently burn out. at around 35000 miles the gearbox developed a fault in that it was difficult to select the gears. this problem finally resulted in the car being stuck in second gear. this problem turned out to be a fault with the selectors hich eventually cost about 400 pounds to repair( of which volkswagen paid half)on having this repair done i was advised by volkswagen that the car also needed 2 new rear shock absorbers. having had the problem with the gearbox i spoke to various people and heard from 3 sources that this model of car does have a problem with the gearbox, being fitted with the same unit that was put in the mark 2 golf. the practical part of the text is that if you are considering buying one of these cars second hand please be aware that these problems do exist and may be expensive to repair. the gearbox in this model when working properly is sharp and very smooth, if the box in any car you test is anything other than that then beware.on the positive side however when running properly these cars are very nice, quite practical and acceptably economical.

I have just got rid of my mark 3 gti 2.0 and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Indeed the rear shocks are an issue as I have heard from others. I have replaced them once. My main bug bear had to be the electrical problems associated with the Mark 3. Dodgy windows and sun roofs. Before buying 2nd hand, check all electrics otherwise you may be dissappointed. Handling, response and all round practicality, no complaints. I have replaced mine with a 2002 1.8T GTI.
