Advantages: Performance, reliability, low price
Disadvantages: Heavy steering, long overhangs, small back seat
I love this car. Thats probably about it for this review then.... You want more? Well, I've owned a couple of Mark 2 Sciroccos (the ones from about 1982 onwards) and loved them both. The car is a sports coupe, but being a Volkswagen it is incredibly reliable. Its also pretty economical too, which is impressive since the performance is so good. I own a GTX, which has the same engine as the more popular Golf GTi. I prefer the sleeker lines of the Scirocco though, and the lower driving position. On the downside, the car is a bit of a nightmare to park, no power steering (and it needs it too!), and the back seat is a bit cramped if you want to carry passengers about. Its got a surprisingly large boot though. Performance wise, it's pretty similar to the Mk2 Golf GTi, 0-60mph in about 8.5 secs. The GTX is very refined, it's quiet on the motorway, and has a nice collection of extras - alloys, tilt/slide sunroof, front foglamps, trip computer. It may be showing its age a bit now, but good examples are well worth hunting down, especially as they can be bought for much less than the equivalent Golf. I can't think of any car that you can get for the same price with the same mix of performance, reliability and comfort.

- 29/06/01 Nice op. I thoroughly agree. Scirocco's are gorgeous cars. I've just written an op on mine if you want to check it out. It's what I'd class as a nice specimen for a 12 year old car. Cheers, joanna |
