VW Golf MK5
by gstarextreme
I thought that after 3 years of ownership I would write a review of my VW Golf GT Sport.
The first and most important point to make about this car is the sheer pace at which it eats up the road, it is rapid - I recently drove a Golf GTI and, whilst the GTI can rev much higher and gain speed quicker that way, the greater torque ... of the TDI meant that it didn't actually "feel" any faster... and bear in mind that on an average tank I will get around 47MPG versus under 34 for the GTI, and I am a keen driver.
The car has been extremely reliable, which I expected to be honest after buying from Volkswagen. The only parts that have been changed are the timing belt, tyres and 2 brake discs (probably related to my driving style). The car does seem to get through a lot of light bulbs however?
The car looks fantastic, is classless - I am a chartered accountant and can unashamedly park my Golf beside the partner's Mercedes without it looking out of place.
Overall, this is an absolute gem, a very quick car which has good economy to boot, particularly important given the fuel prices these days. Oh, and one last point, 132 pounds VED!! Read the complete review |

VW Golf MK5
by Trebesy
I bought my Golf in March 2009 for £7600 after having two VW Polo's.
I have only ever owned a VW and that is mainly due to the heritage and quality of the vehicles they have produced. This car truly is a classic VW design and build, the car gives you that feeling of security and solidness as well as being a ... spacious hatchback.
The first thing that grabbed me about the car was the grunt it had, when you are driving it feels as if there is still more to give.
Handling
The car feels great in all conditions and you always know that you can throw it into a corner, the steering feels light compared to some other cars but you can feel the stability when driving. The steering also feels very responsive compared to other hatchbacks I have driven.
Engine
My car has a 2.0 GT TDi and I am so glad that I went for it, I was debating between this and the 1.9 but having the 2.0 is like having two cars. You can push the car and drive it harsh and it feels really sporty or you can drive it sensibly and get great economy from it.
Economy
When I am driving sensible and with my one eye on my Wallet, I can get around 50 -55MPG from this car. But when I want to drive it hard and accelerate quicker and go on shorter journeys it end up being more like 38MPG -42MPG which has really impressed me.
Reliability
I have had this car for over 1year and half and I have had no troubles with anything (Touch wood) The car starts perfectly and roars which is better than some of diesel engines on the market that sound more like John Deere tractors.
Interior
The interior is spacious and has plenty of areas to store bits and pieces, the only thing that I wished it had was better cup holders. There are two beside the handbrake but they are not very stable. I actually bought a divider that fits in the middle of this from ebay after I saw it in a Mk5 hire car in Germany. The cloth is very durable and looks great with the rest of the car and is very modern looking. Now the best part about the interior for me is the lighting, the blue and red lights on the dash, cd player and ceiling look great and are so crisp and makes reading the dials easier.
Exterior
I love the curves of this car and I personally prefer the shape of this car to the new MK6 but I would say that. I went for the GT model because the car then comes with the body coloured strips and this makes the car look so much more sleek and the 16" alloys look great but I wish I had the wheels from the GT 170BHP model.
Extras
The car being fairly high spec came with some great features which I had never had the luxury of having before....Like a thermometer! But seriously the car has loads of features, it has the coming home lights which turns the lights on when you unlock the vehicle (Useful in dark car parks) It also has a trip computer which includes, Range, Average Speed, Economy, Time, Temp. The car has all electric windows, mirrors and it also has auto wipers, auto lights and a auto rear view dimmer which is great in winter. Oh and dont forget the 6 CD Changer for all those CD's I never listen to.
So overall the car is fantastic it is a pleasure to drive and when I first got the car I was finding excuses to drive the thing anywhere I could. It is very roomy, I have used it on a some airport runs with 3 passengers and their luggage and have had no problem. Read the complete review |

VW Beetle in general
by Gemble
I have had my beetle for 6 months now and I absolutely love everything about it. I'm purchased a candy white Cabriolet beetle complete with a red flower and the novelty still hasn't worn off. This car is such a treat, i enjoy keeping it clean, driving it and don't begrudge feeding it with petrol at all. This car is not only stunning to ... look at, but it is very good on fuel, is a solid car, very reliable and keeps its value, so in the long haul is a good investment. The interior of the beetle is so cosy and accommodating, although the back is quite small the front totally makes up for it... the dashboard is so far forward it is like being in a spaceship and the blue light interior is so magical. Their are many little quirks and hidden cup holders which are always fun to find, i'm still finding new things out even after 6 months. The car itself to drive is very smooth and enjoyable. This car is generally an all-round fabulous and fun car so if your on the fence don't be, you will not regret purchasing a beetle. Read the complete review |
