Advantages: Built like a building on wheels, Very playful in the wet, Enough power to tow a fully loaded trailer
Disadvantages: Useless MPG, makes one hell of a dent in anything you hit
I decided to wite this opinion after reading the only other opinion written on the Volvo 240 series. I too have owned one of the 80's monstrosities and I would agree with almost everything said but am going to have my say anyway. The nasty part of my owning one of these snow maidens was the fact that it was bought for me as an 18th birthday present which as you can imagine was a bit of a shock. It was originally a bit of a joke and I used to screw the balls out of the engine but in fine old school Volvo fashion, it just got on with what it was doing. Although comical at first, it did have it's advantages. I was the only lad I knew that had a rear wheel drive car so fun in the wet was always my forte since the amount of weight in the car meant that it was just, just a little bit ARSE END HAPPY. This was very good for roundabouts, especially when someone I knew was following me. The shear size of the car meant that there was an extraordinary amount of room in both the front and back of the car, but especially in the back. This obviously only had one use and I'm not going to insult you're intelligence by telling you what that use was. In addition, the back seat felt more like your average armchair, so despite my friends having the Golf's Saxo's of this world, lowered, alloys and good ICE, I used to get people asking me for a space in my car instead. The suspension is so soft that I used to drive over speed bumps at in excess of 30MPH and hardly even notice it was there. Finally, the 2.0L engine that was built to last, also did me pround a few times such as pulling up in the outside lane at the lights and leaving a MK2 Golf standing even though I had a car full. The reason being that the car weighed that much that the extra people in the car made very little difference to the overall weight. The disadvantage of the weight is that after unleaded conversion I was only getting about 20MPG and if I throttled the car unmercilessly I could ju
st about get the MPG down into SINGLE FIGURES. Although it would have been nice to own a flash car as my first car, I thoroughly enjoyed owning a Volvo 240......and as I said, it was an 18th birthday present!!!!!!
