Advantages: Comfort, visibility and space

Disadvantages: The engine on my model is slightly underpowered

I bought my Volvo 940 GL estate in December 2002 - it was first registered in September 1991, so when I bought it, it already had 170,000 miles on the clock.

However, nearly 7 year's later and this old car is proving to be a great workhorse. OK, the mpg may not be great, but it continually gets through its MoTs with minimal expense (I obviously use a local garage and not the Volvo dealership!) - it now has 220,000 miles on the clock!

The comfort of the seats is great - especially for long journeys and in Winter, when you can switch on the heated seats - lovely!

The visibility all around the car is excellent - I've not had any problems manoeuvring out of some 'tight' spots!

I'm able to take my wife, two young sons and our pet dog in great comfort when we go on holiday - the dog is in his cage and the necessary items for the holiday are packed round the cage and put on the floor behind the front two seats - so, space is not a problem with this car.

When I have to take garden rubbish to the tip, I can lay all the back seats down and they lay flat, which provides loads of room to literally throw things into the back of the car and then unloading at the tip is very easy!

The only downside of my particular model, is the engine size - I have the 2 litre version - which, on the odd occassion, can be a bit under-powered, especially when driving up steep hills with a full load.

On the whole, though, I am a Volvo convert, as I would never dare touch one when I was younger.

I don't plan on changing this car until it has to go to the great scrapyard 'in the sky' - so, if it's comfort, space and ease of manoeuvring that you're looking for, I would wholeheartedly recommend that you get a Volvo. (I've got my eye on a V70 estate, but that will have to wait for a few years just yet!)

Summary: Great workhorse, with lots of space, comfort and reliability

To the below comment, Reliability is rated at the bottom? I thought this review was very useful. It was full of ownership opinion. I don't need tech info, the manufacturer, gives me that.

You haven't given any tech info... such as mileage, have you had any major problems, any repairs, etc... If you add this information, let me know and I'll immediately change my rating to 'very useful'.
