I bought one of these Golfs in 2004 to replace a petrol Honda Accord I had been running for 2 years. My main reason for purchase was improved diesel fuel economy, I was not dissapointed. Even when driving fairly hard, you would manage to register an average fuel consumption of 50 Mpg, if you took it easy on the motorway, 70mph in 6th gear, on a warm day, you could see 65 Mpg on the trip computer, I know these aren't too accurate, but it must be fairly close. The Golf was an ex fleet car, 4 years old with 80000 miles on the clock, it needed a bit of TLC to get it cosmetically up to scratch, but it had full VW service history. What a hoot these are to drive, ... Read the complete review

This car combines all the things you need in a car at an affordable price. I just imported one from europe at a saving of over £4000! and I can't believe just how good it is. Before you say "it's a diesel though," consider this. At the same price as the petrol GTi, this car's 115 bhp takes it from 0-60mph faster than the petrol version. Take that in, also with the facts that it has a combined mpg of over 50, and the insurance group is about 4 places lower than the petrol model, and you'll see that the diesel is the obvious choice. Faster, cheaper to run, cheaper to insure, buy this car now. ... Read the complete review

A woman's perspective! I like to feel as though I'm part of a car-like I'm wrapped in it (instead of perched on top with my seat bolt upright and my nose pressed against the windscreen) I get this from my Golf TDi, I feel it's safe. OK the seats are firm and the ride can be hard, but it's wonderful to be able to drive over potholes without crushing your skull against the roof. It's got great 0-60 acceleration and the power's there when you need it ie. on the motorway. It's quite nippy for a diesel I was suprised. I find the PAS a bit twitchy at speed, especially when cornering, but maybe that's because I tend to go round corners on my ... Read the complete review

Last week I took delivery of my second Golf, having replaced my GTi with the GT TDI PD 115bhp model. I have had company cars for the last 12 years, and in that time had various cars from Mondeos and Lagunas to a Volvo V40. I think the current Golf is the best all round car I've had, built to a very high standard, and with a big 'feel good' factor making it a pleasure to drive. Anyway, more on the comparison of the two engines. The 2.0 petrol GTi is not a sports car, but offers 'warm hatch' performance with lowish running costs. Speed freaks can look elsewhere to the V5, V6, or 1.8 Turbo models and pay considerably more per mile. This review ... Read the complete review

The car is not a GTI but is swift and handles well. It's best feature is the frugal turbo diesel. I've owned one since January 2000 and have averaged 49mpg over the 18,500 miles I've travelled. That includes some hard motorway driving as well as lots of town driving. the car's torque is brilliant and makes hills seem unnoticeable. The build quality is excellent and I've no complaints. it's as well built as my other car, Volvo v70. I would recommend that you order the car with airconditioning, especially if you've gone for Black as your colour (the range of non-metallic colours is a bit poor and black is a no cost option) ...
