Advantages: Its very fast, Looks good

Disadvantages: Arm rest badly designed, Central controls low, noisy

This is a fast car - small body with 150 BHP diesel. Some internal design flaws let it down - the arm rest needs to be raised to use the handbrake, the headrest must be lowered to allow someone into the back seat (its 3 door), the drivers seat needs to be able to be lowered more (or the steering wheel raised more), the central radio/heating controls are too low, the operation of the fog lights is not flexible - but for all the minor faults, its a great car to drive and the petrol consumption is superb. I've come from a 2.5 V6 and this car with its 1.9 engine is faster ! No surprising that there is a long wait for one.

I have driven the PD 150. It's a superb car to drive, holds the road very well indeed. I was impressed too with acceleration (0-60 is booked at 8.6 although on tests it has easily been under 8...top speed 134 - I didn't test that one!). However, being a 90 bhp tdi owner I felt that the combination of 150 bhp and the torque made overtaking on a hill a real breeze! I am not sure about Mr Pilch's comments...they seem rather trivial to me.

Noticed that the doors are lighter (still very well built though) than my MK III.

Remote central locking is two-stage for rear and front (good for security).

Super b mpg at 50+. However, the mpg indicator (red led) often read out 200 mpg and appeared superfluous. Indicators are well presented on the dash.

Price is very high at £18,205 for the normal paint version and £18,450 for the metallic (why have anything else??) Air con is standard (which is nice).

As the vehicle has only been in production for 12 months or so, I have found secondhand prices mostly £15-£16k....it's holding its value well (at the moment) according the VW garages here in the south west.

At 18k though, I thought a three-year old E class Mercedes would be a better buy.

Overall rating 4.5 out of 5.

unless 'your V6 was poosly tuned, then surely "noisier" - NOT "faster"?
