VW Golf MK5
Advantages: Best reliability out there
Disadvantages: Cambelt at 60k needs doing and weak springs
Owned mine for 5 years now, a mk5 2004 GT 2.0 143bhp. Gorgeous car to drive, so reliable and the diesel gets 500 miles to the tank with ease. I have had a few problems, common faults on Golfs are weak springs, i had a front spring snap on me, not too expensive but annoying, didnt take the tyre or the wheel out thankfully. Also i have had to change the glow plugs, as a precautionary measure the cambelt was done which in turn needed the water pump doing, this should be done at 60k.
i have heard of stories of the noisy whistling turbo going bang, but mine has whistled loudly from 21k right up to 70k been stripped several times and its still going strong.
Would recommend this to anyone looking for a strong, safe, reliable car which truly does live up to the reputation the brand and the golf deserve. it does also like to drink a lot of oil.
Summary: Great car, just make sure its oiled and maintained
