Crowned Review VW Golf SE Hatchback 1.9SE TDI 5-door 90bhp: Diesel; Slow and Noisy? Drive a Golf TDI! (1970 words)

Having owned my Golf TDI 90bhp for almost a year now, I thought it would be useful to write a review so that other potential buyers both new and secondhand alike could share some of my experiences. At the beginning of 2001, I decided that my old car, a M reg Rover 416i, had had its day and I was on the look out for a small hatchback that would be economical, as I am quite a high mileage driver. The Mk4 Golf is in the small hatch league, the same as its arch rivals the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Astra. It is commonly known that all new small hatches that are currently launched are judged against the Golf's build quality and the Focus' ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Not a bad car, but there are better deals (486 words)

The VW Golf isn't a bad car. Its reasonably roomy, comfortable and pretty economical. However, it only beats its competitors on the residual value and the tactile feel of the interior. I hired a MkIV Golf TDI (90bhp) for a weekend and whilst it was competent and frugal, I still wasn't taken with it. The engine has a lot of torque, and is fine for accelerating on a dual carriageway and was economical. However it still sounds like a tractor when you start it up, it lacks outright power for overtaking and you have to sit wait for a 10 seconds between turning on the ignition and starting the car. The interior of the car was OK. However, for all ...  Read the complete review

I have owned my Golf SE TDI for around 2years now, replacing my Mk2 2 Golf Driver. The drive is so smooth and controlled that it makes driving a pure pleasure. During all the problems we have had recently, the fuel stortage and the floods, this is definately one car you can rely on. Its fuel economy is brilliant and the way it drives through water you would swear it had water wings. Most importantly safety, you feel extremely safe with 4 air bags and because of the control you have when driving. ...  Read the complete review

I feel that the golf now has supremecy over most of its rivals. It has a superb range of both engines and features to suit all tastes. Having had my golf SE tdi (90b.h.p.) around 4 months now and have found it most reliable. I have to admit that its acceleration is not quite the best but the saving on fuel compared to my last golf Se (1.4) is quite remarkable. With the price of fuel today this was a major consideration. The turbo is a must because the sdi is less than fast. I feel that anyone buying a car today in the mid-range market could not do any better than to choose a golf. ...  Read the complete review
