When our cat Belle managed to get fleas we had to purchase a flea comb for when the Frontline worked its magic and killed the little buggars off. It was purchased from 5 Away Pets in Bournemouth for around £4.00.
The comb has a steel material set of bristles which are rigid and do not move. They are close together to ensure they catch all the dead little buggars. The handle of the comb is nice and chunky and made of a varnished wood. It is nice to hold and feels comfortable when holding it. It can be used on cats and dogs and I have also known people to use them for just grooming especially on dogs such as poodles who have curly fur.
The first thing to note is that Belle absolutely hated being combed with this flea comb as the bristles on it are a steel sort of material and had no flexability whatsoever. You couldn't comb through her fur too hard or she would go into a scratching and hissing fit. My husband (who was then my fiance) had told hold on to her whilst I did the combing.
The comb went through Belle's fur very easily and picked out dead fleas on the first sweep through her fur. It held on to the tightly and I have to admit it was a bit of a job to get them out of the comb when I rinsed after each sweep through her fur as it just held them in place. I thought the that the tight grip the comb got on the dead fleas was really good as it didn't leave you having to constantly go back through the fur to see if some had fallen out on the way.
I also found the comb picked up flea eggs too which I was pleased as flea eggs are tiny and hard to get a grip on.
It did take a while to go through Belle's fur as we had to do it very gently each time we sweeped through. You have to be careful not to let your pet's fur get tangled up in the comb or knotty bits of fur as it will really pull at the fur.
I found the comb to work really well and after 2 or 3 days Belle's fur was completely flea free. It got the dead fleas and their eggs out quickly, easily and effciently. Highly recommended - 5 years later we still have the comb and though we haven't had to use it since, I think it is a great comb to have around the house just in case or for grooming.
