Asda Smartprice Cat Litter
Advantages: Good value, does what you need it to
Disadvantages: Creates a lot of dust, occasional large stones, heavy to lift
As our cat is a house cat, I refuse to waste money on all-singing all-dancing cat litter which promises the earth. Not that cat litter promises to sing or dance, but I have tried the brands which claim to neutralise odours and minimise dust, and to be honest, I find that as long as you clean out the tray regularly, they are all much of a muchness. I rarely notice a difference in cat litter except for the price.
I always buy the supermarket own label cat litter, which obviously depends on which supermarket I am in. Last time I went shopping to Asda, I picked this bag of Smart Price cat litter up, which cost £1.58 for 10L. This is a good price, and as it's a large bag it lasts us a couple of weeks at least.
The packaging is rather uninspiring, being white and showing a picture of a cat litter try on the front....in case you were in any doubt what this product should be used for. It has a paper-based handle, which is reinforced so it's strong enough to carry the cat litter without breaking. I have bought this one on numerous occasions and have never had any issues with the handle breaking. One thing I would say is that anyone with back, muscular or mobility issues should avoid trying to carry this bag, as it's very heavy to lift. I try to get it delivered when I'm getting an online shop where possible, because I hate having to lift it onto the conveyer belt and in and out of the car and house as it really tires me out. Unfortunately, getting bigger bags works out better value, otherwise I'd get something smaller that was easier to carry and lift when using each day.
The litter itself does the job perfectly well, although it does create a rather bad cloud of dust on emptying out of the bag. I find this to be true of all litters I have used, although this one seems to be marginally worse than Morrisons or Tesco versions. It is fairly light in colour, which I find helps me to ascertain the bits that need removing as it shows up darker when the little chap has urinated. It is easily removed with the aid of a scooper, and spreads easily when fresh litter is introduced.
I have noticed on a couple of occasions that there have been a couple of large (ish) stones in the litter, with slightly jagged edges, which I'm not keen on as I don't imagine it's very comfortable trying to do your business when you're standing on a big stone, and I'm a bit soft when it comes to my cat. Luckily it has only happened once or twice, and I have been able to remove them as I have spotted them, but I've made a note in future to try to source my litter from Tesco or Morrisons before using the Asda one.
I will probably use this litter again, next time I find myself running low and I'm doing an online Asda shop, but the dust cloud and size of occasionally large stones would cause me to choose others ahead of this. It gets the job done though, and I would happily use it again if I needed to. Middle of the road - three stars.

Summary: It's cat litter, what more can I say?!
