Advantages: Help keep my cat in optimum health; It seems to work.
Disadvantages: Can work out expensive to buy if you have more than one cat.
It might not be a subject most pet owners would want to address, but unfortunately both cats and dogs can become infected with worms at any time. The only preventative measure a responsible owner can take is to get their furry friend checked over by a vet every year, and remember to get their pet wormed as and when necessary.
There are two different kinds of worm which affect both dogs and cats: Roundworm and Tapeworm.
.. tend to affect younger cats and dogs. Apparently they can grow up to 7" long if left untreated in pets. I'm not surprised then that side effects of having one of these is a swollen stomach, loss of appetite and vomiting.
.. can grow much longer than the roundworm, and have segments which can break away and can sometimes be seen as small white moving particles in the pet's toilet waste. Apart from causing your pet to lose it's condition generally and leave it with dull looking fur, I'm sure no pet owner who scoops after their dog or cleans a cat litter tray wants to see either kind of worm. Tapeworms can also be spread from one pet to another by fleas, so it's best to ensure that you also treat your pet for fleas at the same time.
Some worming pills I've used on my cat in the past have required her to take three pills at weekly intervals, 2 for tapeworms and 1 for roundworms. This necessitates me having to remember what particular day I gave her the tablet the week before, and going to the trouble of trying to coax a tablet (or in my case two broken halves) down her throat three weeks running. Giving my dog tablets is no trouble as I can simply mix it in with her wet food and she eats it all, but anyone who has tried shooting a tablet down a cats throat will realise how stressful it can become for both them and the cat.
Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to find that with Bob Martin's 2 in 1 tablets, only one tablet is needed.
I paid just over £7 for my box, which seems rather expensive given that it only contains two tablets. Only having the one cat, and worming her at the recommended three monthly intervals means of course that I would have to buy this twice a year.
This is suitable for any cat over 12 weeks old, and can be given whole, or as I prefer, broken in half and given in two bits. From bitter experience, a whole tablet, if I can get it into my cats mouth, will just sit on her tongue with her refusing to swallow it until she starts salivating so much I have to concede defeat and she spits it out. Two halves seem to go down the back of her throat easier making the whole situation far less stressful for both of us. I usually make sure I give Poppy any tablets before she gets breakfast, so at least if there is any bitter aftertaste, it shouldn't last too long.
Do they work?
The best I can say is that they seem to. Poppy isn't considered old in cat years at 4 years of age, and is usually full of beans. Naturally if she were to lose her appetite or start seeming lethargic, I would seek advice from my vet. I'm glad to say, though, that despite the amount of time that she spends outdoors and in the company of our neighbours' cats, she doesn't appear to have worms. I suppose one sure way of knowing would be to examine her toilet waste, but I won't do that any time soon.
I bought this from a local independant pet store, but it's widely available from supermarkets and online retailers as well.
Summary: Helping to keep kitty in tip top condition.
