Bob Martin Meadow Fresh Litter Freshener
Advantages: Works well & Easy to use..
Disadvantages: It's not the cheapest..
Many regular readers of my reviews will know by now that I have a very elderly feline at home with me who unfortunately has a variety of health conditions and impediments. One of these is renal failure, which has a variety of horrible side effects and as a result of this condition my girl drinks a huge amount of water daily, resulting in a need to urinate more frequently than other cats.
As a result of this unfortunate side-effect, her litter tray of course becomes soiled rather quickly, much quicker than it did prior to her illness, and certainly more than other cats that I have owned in the past. I have tried and tested a variety of products to help with the unpleasant aroma that can quickly accumulate in the cat's litter tray and surrounding area.
One such product is from the well-known "Bob Martin" range of pet supplies, namely the "Meadow Fresh Litter Freshener" which is a product aimed at providing a little 'deodorant' to the litter tray. I have used various products like this over the years and have found most of them offer a little respite from smells and whiffs that can easily build up in the cat's trays.
Presented in a cylindrical canister, there is a white plastic 'cap' on top which can be opened easily to reveal some holes through which the product can be dispensed. The product itself is powdered, so pouring it from the canister this way is not difficult, and I find the packaging is fairly robust - even though the canister is constantly kept in the bathroom, it has never suffered anything in the way of damage from the steam or condensation that is often present.
I purchased the Bob Martin Meadow Fresh Litter Freshener from a local branch of Tesco, and paid £1.09 for the 500g tub, but I have also seen it for sale in local pet stores, where it is usually priced slightly lower. The packaging has changed slightly in recent times and is no longer the pale lilac colour as shown in the Dooyoo picture above, with the canister instead being presented in shades of blue, and with a different cat being pictured on the front, but with the familiar Bob Martin logo still appearing near the top of the can. Other than this small 'face-lift' however, the packaging is the same as far as I can remember.
The idea behind the Litter Freshener is that it can be added to your cat's litter tray each time the tray is washed out and the litter has been replaced. By doing so, you can expect your litter to be fresher and of course to smell better with the use of the product.
A thin layer of the powdered freshener should be sprinkled over the cat litter and I find that this process is not at all difficult to do, and I do not find it difficult to control the 'flow' of powder from the canister whilst I am sprinkling it into the litter tray. I am always a little conscious of using too much of the product in my cat's litter tray as it is quite a strong smelling product and I would not like it to put her off from using her tray!
As I said, there is a strong scent from the product that is evident even as I begin to sprinkle the powder through the plastic lid on the top of the canister and I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the scent, although to be fair it smells like a household cleaner or detergent and is quite highly perfumed. The powdered Litter Freshener is a fine powder, and once it is applied to the litter tray I usually give the tray a really good shake from side to side to allow the powder to mix in with the cat litter in the tray. I find that this process is ample to allow the two products to mix together quite well, and I do not feel the need to mix them together any more than this.
I personally think that the Litter Freshener works quite well. I find that the product seems to be quite absorbent and works with the cat litter itself to absorb any nasty whiffs that might be lurking in the litter tray. I have to admit that I do buy quite a high quality cat litter product most of the time and this helps absorb odours also, so I feel that the combination of both of these products is the best possible solution I could buy to help combat any unpleasant odours from the litter tray.
I do replace my cat litter quite regularly, and I probably do so more than the average cat owner which is as a result of my cat having renal failure, resulting in her urinating more than your average feline. My cat is an indoor cat, and so does not get outside to urinate. A combination of her renal problems and her being an indoor cat means that she uses her litter tray several times throughout the day.
This means that I like to wash out her cat litter tray quite often and replacing the litter and by adding the Bob Martin Litter Freshener each time makes me feel as though I am giving my cat a nice fresh, hygienic environment in which she can do her business (with as little offensive side effects to us mere humans as possible!!)
I do feel that the product makes a small difference to the life-span of the litter in my cat's tray but in truth I feel this is helped greatly by the fact I usually use a high-quality cat litter alongside the freshener product. I find that the freshener is quick and easy to use and it offers a convenient way to freshen up the litter. These reasons are enough for me to recommend the Bob Martin Freshener and I do feel it is a fairly worthwhile product for our household. In all honestly though, I never had to use products like this when my cats were young and healthy and got outside for their toilet needs as well as using their indoor trays, so I DO think it is something that younger (or outdoor) cats wouldn't benefit from too greatly.
Summary: It works well for my cat, so I will buy it again..
