As a cat owner I have yet to find the perfect litter to use and I have tried most of the brands on the market. I remember reading some rave reviews about Tigerino which is only available online so decided to take advantage of the offer on Zooplus to buy 2 14Kg bags for £18.80 making the cost 67p per Kg which is pretty low as far as cat litter goes.
The bags are huge and very heavy, I don't normally mention the packaging in reviews but this stuff was made of extremely thick plastic with no obvious place to open the bag. When I tried to tear the first bag open it was really hard work and the bag ended up tearing spilling the litter over the floor so I had to tape it up. The second bag I was a bit wiser and used scissors but there was no way of resealing the bag. The bags of litter are pretty heavy and when first opened were too heavy for me to lift up to pour the litter so needed to scoop it out but luckily the bags are tall and slim so they fitted into the space next to the litter tray.
The litter itself is very fine and a mid brown in colour. The cats took to it no problem and were happy to use it. I fill the tray pretty deeply and they had plenty of room to scratch around and bury their poos. This is a clumping litter which means that the pee and poo is disguised inside huge clumps of litter, finding them when the litter is brown is not always easy meaning I need to dig around with the scoop to find them which is not the nicest task in the world. The litter copes brilliantly with both pee and poo smells, I can go a week or more without changing the tray as long as I scoop everyday which is amazing in a two cat household.
There are a couple of downsides to this litter, the first is that the small grains get stuck in the cats paws meaning there is quite a lot of litter tracked over the house. The second is that you lose a lot of litter when it goes into clumps and need to keep topping up the tray when you scoop.
This is a good litter and will go on my list of litters I will be happy to use again, it's not perfect but the fact it is economical and brilliant at disguising smells gives it 5 stars from me.
Having Persian cats as my constant companions for over thirty years, I wrongly considered myself to be pretty much on top of all the products out there designed to cater for every feline need. It was only with a recent discovery I made of a pet web site called Zooplus, that I discovered a product which has become so popular in our house, I would say it is the find of the year!
My cats are all Persian and they live indoors only. I have also had moggies in the past that would come and go using the cat flap, but since only having Persians I now have the pleasure of their company all day long. Now the down side of this is, of course, that they need somewhere to "freshen up" I have tried every litter on the market and for the last few years settled on Catsan. Being white I found this to look the most hygienic and aesthetically pleasing, but I was growing tired of the way in which it spread over the house as the little pieces got caught in their paws when they left the litter box. The dust factor also annoyed me as this product is quite dusty, and so when I saw a new cat litter on the Zooplus site I decided to try it.
Tigerino Crystals Lavender cat litter caught my eye because it sounded as if it was going to be fragranced, and the product claimed it was lightweight. It just so happened that I wasn't too well that week, and I really didn't fancy a trip to the pet shop or supermarket to buy cat litter. I thought I would order three bags as they were on offer on the Zooplus website for £12.99 for 3 5lr bags - delivery is free for orders over £19 on the site, so I added some other bits and pieces and just under a week later my litter arrived.
Now one of my Persians -Marigold is 12 years old and rather stuck in her ways; and I was a little worried about what she would do when faced with a new litter, so I was careful to mix it in gradually with Catsan. Tigerino is silicate based with speckles of lavender crystals, so it mixed in well, and Marigold was more than happy to use it. Within three days I had completely replaced the litter box with the new product. This was rather impressive as previous attempts to introduce new products had been much more traumatic!
The Tigerino litter claims that there are countless micro-pores within the crystals which absorb liquid and odours within seconds, thus keeping the litter box dry. I would say this attribute was the main reason why Marigold took to it so easily.
The product comes in three variants -plain, lavender and a flowery alternative called flower power which has green flecks in the crystals instead of lavender ones.
With regard to the lavender fragrance it is not discernable in the room at all, so you need not be concerned if you dislike lavender as a fragrance as it can often be overpowering.
I think for me though the benefits have to be with regard to the dust free nature of the product and the fact that it does not creep all over the house trapped in paws. The litter is also compostable and therefore good for the environment, and because it is so absorbent and odour free, as long as you remove the solid waste the litter will last one cat almost a month. As I have three cats I have three litter boxes and I find each tray lasts three to four weeks, easily making it a very cheap product indeed. To use you simply place 4cms of the litter in a clean litter box.
I feel the only negative point the product has is in relation to its ability to hide solid waste. When the cat uses the tray I have noticed, especially with my tomcat who is a bit lazy, that he finds it difficult to complete the task of covering his solid waste adequately in the little time he spends on it. This isn't a problem if you remove it straight away, as I try to do, but if you were out all day this could be an issue if you have several cats waiting to use a tray. This would seem less than adequately clean to them, and you do have the problem of one of them accidentally standing on something. This isn't a problem if you use the rule my daughter was taught in vet school- one tray per cat. She was taught that this is mandatory for cats in multi-cat households to enable them to live happily with each other. That said, Catsan does cover up solid waste more easily, but of course at the expense of producing more dust and odour.
The availability of this cat litter is limited. So far I have only seen it on the Zooplus website, but I can highly recommend this company. I have been using them for some time and have been delighted with everything from ordering through to delivery. I would love to see this product in supermarkets, as it is easy to carry home even if you don't have a car. The company Zooplus are German, and indeed this litter is made in Germany. I have also discovered that there are many products on this website which are new to me in all aspects of animal care, and these are well worth checking out.
I recently returned from a holiday to my house in Scotland where I took all my cats in the car in their carry cages. This journey is very long and takes 18 hours, so they have large cages and litter trays as well. The cats did use the trays on the journey, but there was no odour at all and very little mess either. This was the most successful trip I have made with the cats, and I think this was due to the hygienic nature of the litter. Anyone who has cats will know that they are fastidiously clean creatures, and Persians especially are very particular about grooming and hygiene. I feel this litter is an asset to them, and they have been really happy with this new product - at least equally as much as I am. I no longer have to brush up around their trays as frequently, and there have been substantial savings cost wise on the litter purchases, which for indoor cats are quite sizeable.
Over the years I had migrated off Catsan onto various competitor products with limited success. I am no longer looking for alternatives as this is the top of the choices for me! Tigerino Lavender Cat Litter is simply outstanding, and it has all the attributes necessary to make the worst aspect of cat ownership suddenly melt from a chore to a delight. No more dust, a long fresh duration of toilet facilities with minimal human involvement, and a bank balance boost as the icing on the cake. Environmentally friendly and odour containing this product ensures Marigold's toilet is as fresh as a daisy!
