Trixie Can Cover
Advantages: Inexpensive, easy to use, easy to clean
Disadvantages: I can't find them in a cat design.
I have two cats that mainly eat wet food. Sometimes when I feed them, there will be a little food left over in the can. I used to put it into the fridge but found the smell would rather put me off my own food every time I opened the fridge door. For a short while, I put the half used cans in a cupboard, but I did worry about the food perhaps spoiling in there, so I'd end up tossing out part used cans.
A few months ago whilst in the pet shop picking up other bits and bobs I needed, I saw these, and decided they were just the ticket. There were two different packs available, one that had 2 10cm diameter covers, designed for larger 800g packs of pet food, and a pack of 3 7cm diameter ones, designed for standard 400g food cans. I picked up a pack of three, and at just £1.10 per pack, I wasn't too worried about the potential expense if they didn't do the job.
As you can see in the image above, there are three different coloured lids- a yellow one, a pink one, and a blue one. Other than the difference in colour, they all feature the same design, a cartoonish running puppy, in the centre of a circular lid with a little handle on one side that make the overall shape something like that of a paw.
These fit snugly and easily onto food cans, and feel very secure. You can flip the can upside down and know that the lid isn't going to come off. They've allowed me to keep my open pet food in the fridge without any nasty smells, and of course they keep the remaining pet food sealed hygienically.
They're also very easy to clean - a quick wash in warm soapy water and they are ready to be used again. Please be careful that your water is not too hot - I have found that very HOT water can cause the lids to lose shape a little and lose some of their tightness.
I've had these lids around 4 months now. One was regrettably ruined by me with water that was too hot - it still covered the can but didn't have as tight a seal. The other two work just as well as they ever did, sealing just as tightly. They've suffered a little cosmetically, with a few small scratches and some dulling of the plastic, but I didn't buy them for their looks so I can't really complain!
Overall, I'm giving these 4 stars - I'm taking one off for not having them in a cat design (or at least not in my local pet shop).
