ITrixie Cat Softballs are one of the few types of cat balls that I've bought more than once, regularly in fact. Other toys balls are either not worth buying again or don't need to be replaced; the softballs are worth buying again but do need replacing after a while.
The Trixie Cat Softballs are squashy foam balls, with a kind of dotted pattern over them similar to golf balls. They are slightly larger than the average plastic cat ball. The price is usually around £2 for a pack of four.
These softballs are good for both individual play and for us playing with the cats. The balls roll really well over our laminate flooring, so if a cat bats one then it will roll quite far, which of course piques the cats attention so it starts chasing the ball around. The balls bounce on the hard floor quite well too, so we can throw them for the cats and they leap around after them.
Because these are soft foam, the cats can actually get hold of them quite well with their claws once they catch the ball. Then of course they shake their paw to get the ball off, which sends it flying and they go running after it.
This does however mean that the balls get damaged and small pieces of foam break off. The balls have a reasonable life, maybe a few months of fairly regular play, but then you start to see the wear on them. Once they start to show a bit of wear I throw them out, as although it probably wouldn't do the cats any harm to eat a tiny piece of foam, I'd rather they didn't. The balls come in packs of four, so I give the cats two to start with and put the other two away to bring out once a ball needs replacing.
From our point of view, these are among the best cat balls out there. They roll and bounce, and they don't make a noise on the hard floors like plastic balls do, and they're not those awful jingle balls so when a cat decides to play with one in the middle of the night, it doesn't wake us up (they love jingle balls but they drive us mad). Additionally, because the balls are soft and squashy, they don't hurt in the slightest when you stand on one.
Despite the fact that these balls have a limited lifespan, they are a really good toy. The cats love chasing them whether by themselves or with us throwing the ball, and they have their benefits for us as well. I'll definitely keep on buying these softballs.
