I don't really know much about the Caudalie brand, other than the fact they're a French cosmetics company who charge rather high prices across the board. The old adage of 'so many xxxxx, so little time' is true and although I love to sample premium cosmetics I just hadn't gotten around to trying anything from the brand.
And in all honesty, after using a 50ml tube of their Nourishing Body Lotion I can't say I'm in any rush to hunt out anything else! The best thing about it in my opinion is the smell which is fresh and invigorating but fruity and pampering at the same time - the tube is very pious and tells me all about the zero parabans in the lotion, and the fact it contains anti-oxidants and although it's only giving basic details I do feel the wording is a little 'pushy'.
The lotion is lovely and creamy to apply, absorbing quickly and easily into my skin - the problem comes a few minutes later when it turns my skin far tackier than I'd expect from a £29 body lotion (250ml) and actually becomes uncomfortable for a little while. It's not a greasy feeling but isn't nice and where any areas of skin touch I can definitely feel a vague 'sticky' sensation.
I don't find it a particularly nourishing body lotion, it's moisturising to an extent but certainly doesn't provide the 'instant' nourishment promised by Caudalie - it's a bit of a damp squib to be honest and the luxurious injection of moisturisation I was expecting never quite materialises, it's nice enough (other than the tackiness) but I can't get past the feeling that it seems as though Caudalie have put more thought into making it appear to be a sensational product than actually making something befitting of the price tag.
I'm glad I'm using the 50ml sample tube as I wouldn't have been happy to lay out the cost of the full size bottle only to find it's a Boots-own type moisuriser with a premium fragrance!
Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion
I bought a set of travel size Caudalie products and this was one of the products in the set. I have a lot of body moisturisers and body butters so I really didn't need more but I am really glad that I bought the set - even just for this product.
- Product description (from feelunique.com)
"Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion is a rich, hydrating body treatment, enriched with plant-derived ingredients that provides intense nutrition and anti-oxidant action to your skin. Unctuous, it encourages micro-circulation and helps prevent premature skin aging. Caudalie Vinotherapie Nourishing Body Lotion can also be used by pregnant women as it promotes micro-circulation and can help to prevent stretch marks."
- About the product
As I bought this product in a set it is only a travel size bottle and the bottle is 30ml which is a great size for travelling - I did take this product on holiday with me this year (18-25 august 2012) and it was a life saver! This lotion does not contain parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalate and it is dermatologically tested. Also quite a few of the ingredients are derived from plants too. This lotion is aimed at people with normal to dry skin and it claims to: soften, tone and make the skin more radiant.
The scents of all the caudalie products I have tried have been really nice and this one is no exception, in my opinion anyway. As I used this product while on holiday in the Mediterranean the scent of this product now reminds me of my holiday there which is probably why I love the scent. The scent smells like a mixture of sunscreen and a slight perfume. The scent is really fresh, light and summery smelling which I love. Although on me this scent does not last as long as I would like it too unfortunately.
- Using this product and results
I have used up all of the 30ml bottle in roughly 10-11 days which isn't that great but while on holiday I was using this product twice a day (in the morning and in the evening, after a shower). While on holiday I used this body lotion as an after sun, I did not use any other body lotion/moisturised bar this one on holiday and it worked amazingly well, for me. I used a large pea sized amount of this product for each arm/leg etc so I did go through this product really quite quickly. This lotion applies so nicely because of the smooth, creamy consistency of the lotion and because of the light consistency which allows the product to glide across the skin so quickly and easily. The lotion while being used releases the gorgeous fresh scent which is really quite uplifting and summery.
After massaging the lotion into my skin, the areas which were tanned and slightly sunburned were almost immediately soothed and hydrated by this product. While using this product on holiday I did not need to use any other lotion and I did not experience any flaking associated with sunburn while using this product too. After application it does not take long at all for this lotion to absorb; it takes about two minutes or so for the lotion to have absorbed into my skin. This product leaves my skin feeling soothed, smooth, softer and slightly more toned but this effect is not major. This lotion also has a slight cooling effect I find which is great when used on tanned skin and sunburn. Overall, this product has a really nice texture/consistency, it glides onto the skin quickly and easily, it has a really nice scent (although the scent will not be to everyone's taste) and the lotion leaves my skin soothed, hydrated, smooth and slightly scented.
- Price and availability
I bought this product as part of a set for £10.53 which is a good price in my opinion and it is a great way of trying various travel size caudalie products (I bought the set from lookfantastic). This product can be purchased individually for £26-£21 from Feelunique, for a 400ml bottle. I will be buying the full size when I have used up some of the many other body lotions/butters that I have accumulated.
*Easy to use
*Scent - fresh, light and summery - not overpowering, in my opinion
*Lives up to its claims and it really soothes my skin, especially when it is tanned and slightly sunburnt
*Smoothes, softens and slightly tones my skin too - although the toning effect is not major
*Packaging, use of natural ingredients, great brand
*Does not leave my skin greasy or heavy and it does not irritate my skin
*Full price is quite expensive
Thank you for reading my review
I seem to have a never ending supply of body lotions, but I'm trying to change that, with my New Years Resolution to use up all of my products before buying any more. One product that I've been using recently is the Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion. I received this in a 30ml travel size in a beauty box. Although this is not the first Caudalie sample I have received in recent months, it's the first one I've actually got around to using.
Caudalie are a French brand based in Bordeaux and their selling point is that they use grape-seed Polyphenols in their products, which are said to protect the skin from free radicals - a cause of ageing. Since 2006 all of their products have been free from Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulfates, mineral oils, artificial colourings, phenoxyethanol, phthalates and animal ingredients, so that should be good news for those looking for natural products. In fact they seem to have quite strong ethics - visit their website to learn more (link at the bottom of the review).
The full sized product comes in a white and green bottle with a pump dispenser. I actually really like pump dispensers on body lotions, so that little feature is a plus point for me. My travel size is in a tube rather than a bottle, but the green and white design on the front is pretty much the same. I have to say, I don't think the packaging is particularly special and nor would it stand out to me on a shelf in store. Caudalie is not the cheapest brand in the world, but I don't think I would have guessed that just from the packaging alone.
This body lotion is formulated for normal to dry skin. Although I get a lot of dry skin on my face, on my body, I have some areas where I would describe the skin as normal (stomach, thighs, arms) and some where it is dry (elbows, knees, shins, feet) so this body lotion should fit my needs perfectly.
I usually apply this body lotion before going to bed. The lotion is white and glossy and I find that it spreads across the skin quite easily, with only a relatively small amount being required per application. The big downside for me is that the lotion does not seem to absorb into my skin very quickly and leaves behind a slightly greasy film. It was for this reason I started using it before bed, as the one time I used it in the morning, I found that the thin cotton cardigan I'd chosen to wear that day was sticking to my arms slightly. My fiancé has also commented that my skin feels sticky after using this and tends to complain when I apply it!
Another downside to this product is the scent. I didn't quite know what to make of it when I first started using it and was hoping the smell would grow on me, but unfortunately it hasn't. Even now I can't quite put my finger on what it smells of - let's just say it's unique! I'd describe it as being slightly musky with a spiciness to it although it has a quite sharp tone to it too. Whilst it's not a scent I particularly enjoy, it's not the worst fragrance ever and I can tolerate it, but I think even if the product absorbed into my skin better, I would not re-purchase the product due to the odd scent, which lingers on my skin for some time after use.
As a moisturiser this product does seem to work quite well. As I mentioned, I apply before bed and when I wake up my skin tends to feel soft and the dry patches on my elbows and knees are much more hydrated. The Caudalie website claims this will leave skin looking radiant, but I must admit, other than being more hydrated in dry areas I have not noticed any visible improvement to my skin since beginning to use this.
The full sized product is 250ml and retails at around £18-£19 in most places. It is available from House of Fraser, Debenhams, Boots and John Lewis. For that price, personally I would expect something of better quality. If you are interested in purchasing this product, my 30ml tube lasted around a week, so by my calculations, the full 250ml size should last just over eight weeks assuming you apply it daily.
Overall, I have been quite disappointed with this body lotion, which is a shame, because having read up on Caudalie, I like how strongly they believe in natural products and I was looking forward to using this. Unfortunately for the price tag, I would expect something which absorbs better and something with a nicer scent. I would not recommend this and would not repurchase, but I'll be interested to try out the other Caudalie samples I have lurking around somewhere to see if they're any better.
