Advantages: Easy, Powerful
Disadvantages: Not many
NERO 6 - a pretty decent program, built on the very successful 5.5 package, centring on the CD and DVD burning software and far and away the industry standard. It costs around 55 quid, although if you visit http://www.nero.com/en/Nero-6-Buy.html you can get a cheaper version, based on ordering a serial number from Ahead software who make the package so that you can unlock the demo download version and get the full package for around £38. If you've got an earlier version you can get an upgrade for about 27 quid. If you do need to burn CD's or DVD's (and who doesn't these days?), then you can't get much better than NERO 6 which is very functional and easy to use, doing just what it says on the tin, extremely successfully. It's a real dream to operate and is extremely powerful and easy to work. It's extremely robust and reliable and will never let you down. It's unbelievably quick to operate, much better than the Adaptec packages which also go around and have all sorts of operating problems. Like many Windows based programs around these days it works off a very intuitive and instinctive graphical interface with drag and drop just like Windows Explorer so that you select the files you want to copy in one window and then simply drag them across to the recording window and just click to set the whole thing going. You have the ability to test before you burn, but I've never really felt the need and normally just set it going. Recording to a single CD normally takes about twenty minutes or so as far as I recall. According to the NERO website (see above) "Nero 6 grew as a logical extension of Nero Burning ROM 5.5. Our aim is to offer a package that meets all your wishes and requirements. We have
achieved this goal with Nero 6: You now not only receive an all-round program for burning disks but, much more, a whole collection of programs covering all the tasks relating to the creation of media contents as well as recording them on CDs or DVDs. In addition to the very successful and now further improved Nero Burning ROM 6 and Nero Express 6, you now have complete audio and video processing functions as well as a complete backup function. NeroVision Express 2, Nero Wave Editor 2 and Nero SoundTrax are used for processing and generating video and audio contents on CD and DVDs. Nero BackItUp saves data (either on command or as a regular task). All these programs and functions can be reached via the new Nero StartSmart command center. You simply choose the task you would like to carry out and Nero StartSmart launches the appropriate application." Yes, that's as maybe thankyou very much but the really key thing is not all that additional crap but the fact that it does the extremely simple things very well indeed and will not let you down. I have to say I've not strayed into the added value bits as I just want something that does the basics very, very well indeed, and NERO 6 sure does that. I can't vouch for all the other features as I don't use them, but if you just want simple software to burn your discs then you simply can't do any better. Wherever I've looked on the net to get some advice NERO has always been given a strong vote of confidence and so why should you go anywhere else for your goodies. The package takes about 10 minutes to install and set up, although you have to wade through three separate installations to get the whole thing. It takes up about 220Mb of
your hard disk once it's up and running but that's by no means unreasonable these days. You really can't complain when you get a very functional package like this one and one which also manages to do even the easy things extremely well.

- 06/01/05 I downloaded the trial version of this, but it's too bloated for me, I'll stick to 5.9. Sandra. x

- 16/02/04 I am using Nero express and sudenly its started junking loads of discs. I have done a virus check, unistalled |nero and reinstalled. But even though it looks as though it has written the songs to disc and lists them all, for some strange reason they get stuck when playing back on my normal cd player at track 6 or track 7.
Have you any advice? |
