Advantages: Offers A Lot, Good Interface, Reasonably Priced.
Disadvantages: Very Slow Installation, Some Poor Utilities Included, Single User Licence.
"Oh, no - why have you got Nero 9."
That above statement was the general response I received from people, when they found out I got it. "Poor Nero" I thought to myself. I haven't even received it yet and people are knocking it. But I tried to stay optimistic and open minded.
But, first of all what is Nero?
The software is a multimedia suite that allows the user to copy, burn, create, edit and share information such as video files, photographs, music, and personal data. It also allows you to record, or playback DVD's, high definition channels (subject to hardware requirements), and other video files. Highlights of this latest version include a one click rip, burn, backup and copy function. The ability to upload videos to sites such as YouTube and MySpace, and to backup to Blue-ray discs. There's also a movie wizard with various themes (such as birthdays) to create home movies. Another addition is Gracenote, which can be used to track music information (such as album and artist), and finally Nero RescueAgent which can help to recover data from damaged discs.
Once upon a time Nero was a simple burning engine, but times change and Nero has evolved into software that you can do a lot of things with. While I'll be using it mainly for burning to DVD's and playing back video files, it's good to know that the extra utilities are there in case I need them.
The software claims it has a "Fast, easy, and convenient user-interface," and for the most part I agree. Burning data to discs of any nature, is still easy and straightforward especially if your filmier with Nero, and if not its simple enough to learn.
However, it's not perfect. The installation was very slow, but it's a big package spanning several gigabytes. If necessary you could choose to not to install some of the components. Speaking about a big package, for some reason the box is huge- almost encyclopedia like. To be honest I didn't like Nero BackItUp, software that lets you back up your data, it seems hit and miss, and I did receive a few error messages. Considering how important data can be - it is a disappointment, and I would recommend using better, more reliable, dedicated software. Editing Videos does seem rather drawn out and slow, if video editing is something you do often, then again I would recommend having separate software. Also this seems to be a single licence for a single computer, disappointing if like in my case you've got more than one computer.
I'm not sure why there is so much negative hype towards this version of Nero. Even on Amazon, there is a wealth of 1-star reviews. Sure it has it problems, and is perhaps trying to do too many things at the same time. While I haven't needed to use some of the features yet, I personally don't see a great deal to fault.
If you're only interested in burning data to discs, then there is no point in upgrading. Still with your excising software, use Windows Media player, or a cheaper alternate to Nero.
