thompatruck Arcam Alpha 7: ... does such a small company achieve such worldwide appreciation? Simple, Buy this CD player and you'll know! The Alpha 7SE has received praise since it's launch and is still going! I bought mine in a package deal from Richer Sounds, after the 'What Hi-fi' Awards in 1999 in which it achieved the best in category award. The 7SE has every feature you could ask of a CD player and more, apart from the...

icarus Sony SCD-XB 940
... been using the Sony XB 940 for about 6 months now which has given it plenty of time to settle down. Playing CD's the machine gives a fairly refined version of the typical Sony sound. Base is powerful but controled, mid range is good but the top end "could try harder" The overall balance is both involving and easy to live with. It's not a sound which stands out in a 5 minute audition. It doesn't have the same "by the throat" sound of some of the Marantz or Arcam decks but in a longer listening session its strengths easily see off the opposition. It doesn't provide the same level of detail as a top end machine but I would rate...

M_J_Carrier NAD C 520
... tries to lay to rest some of those style critics. I've had opportunity to test the player with the NAD C320 Intergrated Amplifier and its a combination to die for. It manages to pick out individual voices while maintaining a grasp of rhythm and timing. It still classes itself as a budget CD player but for your budget user they're getting more than budget equipment. What can I suggest to improve it? Well CD text would be a handy extra but I really can't think of anything else this is a truly great CD Player. ...

Nibelung Yamaha CDX-496
... bought the Yamaha CDX-496 as a replacement for my trusty Technics machine, which was about 10 years old, and bristling with features. My main reason for upgrading was the fact that the Technics was starting to get choosy as to which CD-R it was going to play. Having a CD-Burner in my PC means that I make a considerable number of compilation albums, and having to choose a particular make of CD-R was limiting me to the expensive ones only. Buying a CD-Recorder just to ensure reliable play-back of “burnt” disks, would have been excessive when I can write them on my PC with greater flexibility, like being able shorten tracks or fade them into each-other. Anyw...
