Arcam Alpha 7:
... recently had the good fortune to aquire an Arcam 7SE at a very favourable price. So good in fact, that I figured I couldn't afford NOT to buy it. I wasn't looking for a new CD player, in fact I was perfectly happy with my Marantz. Neither have the rather dowdy old-fashioned looks of the Arcams ever appealed to me. So you can trust me when I say that I didn't run home, frantically rip the beast out of it... Read the full review: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing by RogerP |

Sony CDP-XE 530 ... CD player sounds extremely good for a budget machine. It has audiophile quantities combined with lots of features and good build quality. It has CD text, display off (for improved sound quality), line out volume control (handy if your amp does not have a remote control) and a good remote control. The sound quality is surprisingly very good for the price. The bass won’t match Sony’s more expensive CD player or even a basic offering from the likes of NAD but I think its very good for the price when comparing it the older more expensive CD players. The sound is smooth and seductive although in can sound slightly harsh when playing poor quality pop songs.... Read the full review: Another brill Sony by amazingtrade |

Sony CDP-XE 220 ... might be at the bottom of the pile when it comes to Sony's range of CD players but this deck delivers excellent sound quality, even through the supplied interconnects which, according to Richer Sounds, only serve to make the unit functional. Well, if that is the case, "proper" cables might not make this fantastic little number sound much better as it already does an excellent job. There is very little in the line of features on this deck. Whilst I am not an expert, I often feel that the more circuitry there is in a deck, the more sound degradation there will be. Although I have not got one nor have I seen one for many years, the DAC (digital to anal... Read the full review: best budget CD player by |

Arcam Alpha 7 ... does such a small company achieve such worldwide appreciation? Simple, Buy this CD player and you'll know! The Alpha 7SE has received praise since it's launch and is still going! I bought mine in a package deal from Richer Sounds, after the 'What Hi-fi' Awards in 1999 in which it achieved the best in category award. The 7SE has every feature you could ask of a CD player and more, apart from the usual controls as standard it comes with a slimline remote (with great pick-up!) , a digital output useful for minidisc recording, display features allowing it to be turned off to improve the sound quality, and numerous programming and scanning options to set...
