A good player for a good price (Marantz CD 5001S)

Advantages: Sound and build quality, looks, price Disadvantages: Although not a disadvantage for me, it does not play MP3/WMA Bought about one year ago to replace a Marantz universal player. It actually came in a pack together with a PM4001 amplifier that I sold back on ebay, so it ended up costing less than £100. It is currently connected to a Marantz PM6002 amplifier using standard (but shielded) cables. The sound is very good, a small improvement over the already good universal player but still well worth the money; the midange clearly gained clarity and the highs were less harsh. It has many features that I never really used; I just put in the CDs and press play so can't really comment! Only thing that annoys me is that pressing stop once will force you to start the disc from the beginning instead of storing the current position like many DVD players do. It also doesn't play MP3 or WMA but when you buy such equipment why would you want to anyway??? And you CAN tell the difference between a CD and an MP3! It comes with its own remote, which can be easily replaced by the one that comes with the PM6002, unless you want to use the more advanced functions. It also has a headphone jack on the front in case you don't have one in your amplifier. Disc loading is fast and the mechanism is precise and silent. Only left to say that it is extremely easy to setup and use! If you're on a budget you might still find these on the internet. And you won't regret the buy! Summary: If you want a cheap player that does the job like the big boys, this may be your choice.
