gunneruk HP CD-Writer 8230e: ... bought this as a gift for my girlfriend, she has an HP laptop. I am a techie and I have much experience with installing things like this. The initial install was problematic, after installing the drivers, the 8230 and the internal laptop cd stopped working. HP tech support tried to get it working but I ended up re-installing Win 2000. That really sucked. The HP "MyCD" software is not that great. I have...

... NO! MORE EXPENSE! BAH, HUMBUG!! Funny ol' world innit? Only a few days ago, I was wondering why my Yamaha 8424 IDE CD-RW wouldn't work, cursing at the fact that it was a 'good' one when I bought it, costing somewhere in the region £160 three years ago. When you start to add up everything technical that's gone wrong recently, like my £350 Sony DVD 525 player, which lasted just three years, you soon see where the money goes! Then I got to thinking - these two items alone have cost me £3 a week (of my net income) to own in theory. Fortunately, technology redeems itself by moving on, making things cheaper in the process. For example, a replacement...

Lizzad Aopen CRW 5224
... is a reliable drive available at a very good price at the moment at (www.dabs.com). I purchased one just a couple of months ago, have used it to burn many cds since then and i have no problems. Easy to install & easy to use. I've burned probably 60-70 cd's on it so far and had no problems with the drive itself, only with pc memory and system resources etc. The main negative observation i have is that it does eject cds rather quickly, this could lead to a wearing down of the open and closing mechanism over time. I think its better to have a slower, smoother motion. Overall, it's a decent drive, however, there are better models in it's class. Bo...

dcoward1 Teac CD W548E
... bought this drive to upgrade on a TEAC W254E that gives good performance and reliablity, being attracted by the better speeds offered. The installation was no problem initially but although the performance was promising, the drive caused frequent system crashes and hangs, refusing to eject discs unless rebooted. The TEAC helpdesk was totally useless in fixing the troubles and it now lives in a box in the loft where it will stay until I bin it finally. Later, having read a U.S. magazine review, I learnt that this was a list of faults they had found and assumed would be fixed when it went on sale. The original drive is now refitted and doesn't give any problems. ...
