... was very disappointed when I got this for my computer back in Summer 2000. The software you get with it is good but it is simply too unreliable. It has problems detecting CD-R media and therefore fails to burn. I remeber trying 30 times to get it to take a CD. I was not impressed at all. Toshiba SD R1002 ... SD-R1002 drive looks and performs much the same as the Ricoh. It has a tray loading mechanism and is quick and easy to install. The drive comes with a great bundle of software, most of which would prove useful to an average gamer. As well as the InstantCD CD-R burning software there's a packet writing routine called InstantWrite, and a string of applications like MusicMatch and MusicMover for MP3 and LiquidPix for photo editing. Toshiba's InstantWrite doesn't seem that instant. Writing data to a CD-RW took over 40% longer than on the Ricoh and reading them back was nearly two and a half times slower on this drive. Ricoh 9060A ... were the first to produce a combo drive. The MP9060A has been around for a few months now, but still holds up well under test. The single drive takes CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and DVDs, all in the same tray mechanism. It comes bundled with the excellent Nero 4.0 CD-R burning software from Ahead and the same companies inCD packet writing utility. Without packet writing, you can't drag and drop from a CD-RW disc but, with it, you can treat the disc as a rather large (arond 650Mb) floppy drive. It takes about 18 minutes to format a blank CD-RW disc on a 4 speed rewriter the first time you do it. After that it's just a few seconds for a re-format. I copied a mixed b... Ricoh 9060A ... writer is very, very good. When I first got it, I was well chuffed in buying the writer. For starters it wrote at a reasonable six speed and it could also rewrite, and plus it can read DVDs. Now that was an added bonus. The writer can copy virtually anything. It is also supported by a very large range of softwares. It also came with Nero Burning ROM which is a very good CD copying and writing program. Mp3 CDs work very well with it also.
