Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: doesnt like "cheap" discs
A great simple to use cd writer. The fitting instructions are very easy to follow. You fit it into a spare 5 1/4" drive bay. It comes with 2 labels and 2 dual case inserts. It is 10xwrite, 8xrewrite and 32xcd rom. This enables you to copy most things. The programme it comes with is also easy to follow. Basically to use it, you install the software first. It will tell you when to put the disc you want copied into the cd rom then shuts the door automatically and opens the cd write door. Put in a disc. It will again close and then tells you it is doing a speed read test. When this is completed it starts copying. If you have a message come up saying "please insert blank disc" when it has already got on in it dont do like we did. Find out by our mistake. We first checked no dust or scratches. Still it didn't work. Then we uninstalled it and installed it again. Still it didn't work. Then we disabled this that and the other. Still didn't work. By now we were getting ready to throw a brick at it. So we wrote to hp. They replied quickly and were great sending us a whole list of instructions all of which we had already done but we did them all again. Still didnt work. We had to go to the shop where we bought the computer for other bits and pieces and on the off chance just thought that we would ask one of their whizz kids if he had any ideas that he could suggest we did. We got the reply "try a different make of disc as some discs are quite transparent and dont work well". So we bought some more discs. Only 5 as didn't want to waste money on what we thought would not work. Got home and sat in front of the computer with the thought going through the mind of "this ain't gonna work" but went through the motions. and bingo up comes the message "writing cd". So the moral is this. With this cd writer it doesn't like cheap discs! Some cds have some s
ort of code or something that prevents them from being copied as the programme comes up with a "read error" message. I am only doing this to try out the cd write though as I know its illegal to copy cds. Honest!! .

- 20/08/01 I have made a mental note to be wary of cheap disks. Not that I have a CD-RW, but you never know! |
