... but it turned out a piece of software was conflicting with it ( software called 'virtual drive 2000') well done to the technical support team for solving this problem for me. it's the only tech support line i've ever called that has been usefull! the drive works well at it's highest speed of 6x write and 4x re-write. the adaptec software isn't the best around, but it works well enough which is the main thing.
