CARR'S CHEESE MELTS
COST - £1.35 from Tesco
AVAILABILITY - These are available from all good supermarkets such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys. You will also find them in Spars, corner shops and other convenience stores.
PACKAGING AND STORAGE - My box is a little different from the picture shown and is navy with an orange top but with the same general design on the front. However the writing is written going down the box vertically and therefore can be opened and kept this way, with the box standing up. However the lid does not re-seal and unless you are actually going to stick the lid down with a bit of tape or put the whole box into an airtight container you would be better to keep them in a small sealed tin/box or biscuit barrel. If you opt for the latter however you will end up with cheesy crumbs over all your other bisuits because these Carr's Melts are really crumbly so actually probably better to store them alone.
INGREDIENTS AND NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION - These biscuits are said to contain only the "finest ingredients" and also contain no hydrogenated vegetable oil, artificial colours or flavourings. The biscuits are 21 carories per biscuit which I think considering they contain dried cheese is actually quite low. The only snag with this is that you are very unlikely to have the restraint to only eat one of these and to be honest you would need at least four, probably with toppings for a suitably filling snack. By the time you add the calories for four biscuits and all the trimmings, it is suffice to say that these would not be great for a diet! However they are a great additive to a varried and healthy diet when eaten in moderation.
LOOK AND SMELL - Each biscuit is an extremely thin wafer-like round creamy coloured biscuit with poppy seeds throughout. They ressemble a cracker but without the hardness. They have an extremely cheesey smell - I would say they smell a bit like parmesan cheese or another strong cheese of that nature.
TASTE AND TEXTURE - You definately need to eat these over a plate and not whilst dropping crumb's all over your laptop (oops!). As soon as you take the first bite the biscuit breaks into many pieces. They are very crumbly and extremely messy to eat.
The taste however is divine. The biscuit melts in your mouth but also has a grainy texture which I attribute to the poppy seeds. The cheesy taste is prominent but not too strong or over-powering. I do not like mature cheese and find some cheesy biscuits such as RITZ far too strong and tarte. These are mild and have an altogether different taste. They are creamy and rich and in my opinion it is not possible to eat just one!
They taste great alone or with a topping.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS - My nine year old daughter actually loves these and there is usually a fight oveer the packet! To give her a change in her pack lunch, I will pack about six of these in a sealed box. In seperate boxes I also put grated cheese, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers and a little ham. She then helps her self to what she wants at school and eats them with various toppings. This is one of her favourite pack lunch treats and there is never a crumb left when this is included for lunch.
I also like to eat them with a little cottage cheese on top or for an extra cheesey sensation I will add some edam cheese. My partner has a more refined taste than I and enjoys advocado and salmon slices on his.
FINAL THOUGHTS - These are a really versatile snack which our entire family enjoy. It is great to eat them on there own for a quick treat or with a topping for a more filling snack or light lunch. These are slightly dearer than other cheese biscuits on the market but they are the best out there. Other cheese biscuits on the market simply do not compare to these and in that sense these are great value and a great buy.
Summary: Gorgeous cheesey biscuits that melt in you mouth.
